Overclocking my gpu

With using Msi afterburner I plan on overclocking my 970. From what I've read you increase core clock by 10 each time until it crashes. Correct me if I'm wrong. After it crashes should I go back to what I had it at before it crashed? I do not plan on messing with voltage at this time which is why I ask. Next step would be memory clock, would I do the same with that as what I did with my core clock?

if you plan on doing it without increasing voltages. yes. do it till you see artifacts then back off abit
