have overclocked to 4.9Ghz at 1.27v it seems stable can game all day ( destiny 2, fortnite, borderlands 3, also watch twitch etc on a 2nd screen ) while gaming temp sits on avg 55c which to me seems good, but i was told that for the overclock to be truly be stable it needs to run prime95 for 2 - 4 hours, 10- 15min into prime95 running and temps go up to 90c is this normal? i understand prime95 is meant to be hard on ya cpu but should it hit 90c so fast?

cheers for any feed back

We have a very similar setup with my 8700K at 4.9GHz with 1.278v...As to stability I personally would not worry about the 2 to 4 hour time frame as all the primary games and programmes you are running are working fine. I did a lengthy Prime95 run of nearly 3 hours on version 26.6 and an Aida64 run to double check on stability but 30 minutes should be enough to see whether there is any instability...

I should have mentioned that temps can reach 90 degrees on the Prime95 small FFT test dependant on CPU cooler and you have a good cooler so I expect it should be a bit less. I finally took the plunge to delid my 8700K and my temps even with small FFT's never tops 70 degrees but based on what you are doing, your numbers are actually fine for gaming all day long.... be happy.

So i should leave it running for 30min even if it stats at 90c?

Yeah wasnt to happy when it hit 90 lol might look at replacing the paste

Just to clear the temps up. 100 Degreec C is TJ MAx and at that point the 8700K will downclock. As I said, I personally would not worry unless you are after overclocking records...So long as it is running everything with stability and at a good temp, you are fine.

Edit 04 Oct - thank you for the edit on the TJ Max to 100 Degrees C...whoever did that, it is appreciated...
