hi
these are my spec's

Intel quad 9550 (E0)
GA-P35-DS3L
Corsair 4gb 800mhz 6400c5, 5-5-5-18
XFX 4890 XXX 1gb

i would like some help overclocking my cpu

i've read the guides just need some help with settings

thanks

you are going to need better ram if you want to do any real overclocking with that cpu.

as for right now, just match the frontside bus of your cpu to the fronside bus of your ram. 400.

thats really all you can do until you get some better ram.

Ok so tottaly don't listen to that guy he aparently has not had much overclocking exp. as long as you have your ram set 1:1 if you set your fsb to 400 DDR ala 800 or PC6400 you will be over clocked to 3.4 ghz this is your multi 8.5 x 400 and your ram can handle 900 most likely most can up the vcc on the ram by .1 and that would be 450 fsb or 8.5 x 450 = more than 3.8 ghz. You do not need better ram and yes your proc can do 3.8 if your lucky I have a q9400 at 3.8. Just start at the 400 this will work 100% sure and work up from there. I know the fast ram makes people all giddy but don't go for its a wast unless you just need more it is cheap but not needed.

Sorry neon neophite but your wrong there. This isnt an i7 (=

you pretty much said what i said, but u suggest he overclocks his ram, im betting that doesnt turn out.

I hadsome gskill ddr 6400 running 1000 for awhile no probat 2.2 volts since 1066 is just overclocked/volted 800 unless you happen to get the crappies of crap ram yes I can almost garantee itwill work I had some crap Dell ram at 1000 to just to see. I would not expect that to work every time but proof of concept anyway. 900 is not apush for almost any ram. We said almost the same thing I agree the diffrence I think is you asume he will not be happy with 3.4 which makes what both of us said mute but I would bet he would go a little higher 3.6 or so at least that has his ram just a little over 800 All ram can go 50 over that i have run into. Either way a quad at 3.4 is still a screamer and anything over 3.8 is not really fealt unless you are encoding and such might gain a frame hear and there but prob not worth all the work to get something stable at those speeds.

hi

ok questions

1) if set the fsb to 400 and the system ram multipiler to 2.0 that would be 800mhz

2) and the voltage do i start at .1 and work up from there

3) what should i start at with cpu voltage

4) should i set the pci express frequency too 100 or keep it at auto

5) can i change the ram latency, like to 4-4-4-12

thanks

hi just read your next reply

so i could go for 3.6

425 x 8.5 = 3.6125
400 x 9 = 3.6

450 x 8.5 = 3.825 <--- is this possible?
425 x 9 = 3.825 <--- is this possible?

ram voltages at 2 or 2.2?

but what about the cpu voltages what should i start at

i dont wanna fry my cpu i just brought it

thanks

hi

ive read the sticky here and in a lot of other forums and some were quite good but i still can find the answers to some of my questions

well i found that i need to set my pci-e to 100mhz

and i found out that my ram has a voltage of 1.9v so i can up that by .1 to 2.0v and its not worth messing with the timings

and my cpu min and max voltages are 0.85V – 1.3625V but ive seen some overclockers settings at more than my max

and then you got all the other voltages what do i do with them

problem is with the sticky its not like it tells where and what to do, my bios is different from someone elses which makes it even harder to get what settings go where.

and all this numbers stuff is going over my head.

i cant be the only noob trying for the first time to overclock the cpu and finding answers to there questions are "read the sticky its all there" but to someone who dont understand it all the answers arent there.

its just frustrating

Ok here we go i would set the ram at 2.1 volts you will not have any issues. Set your volts on 1.35 and fsb 425 like you said and see if it boots no big deal if it doesn't just power on and off a few times and bios will default back to stock at least on gigabyte boards it does. I have my q9400 at 1.45 volt no big deal runs fine have a huge heatsink though. yess you can run at 3.8 I have seen q9550 at 4.2 but I wouldn't push it for every day 3.6 is plenty 3.8 if you wanna show off :) I have run my volts at 1.5 ran fine was running a 500 fsb but I did not want to leave it that way it was just fun to see LOL. There is a point at which speed leaves you with less stability and you need to find that point. sometimes it won't show up for hours and the right in the middle of something fun bam blue screens and such. run some burn in software for 2 3 hours should give you an idea since no real program will give 100 usage unless encoding thns and such. I would say you can set your ram timings to 555-12 easy would not try 444 12 that would be a bit much. 1 last thing is the north and south bridges you might wanna give a little boost on the volts start wth 1 bump from stock and go up to 2 or 3 bumps would not go much more than that on an everyday computer gunna run hot as it is :)

cool thank you for your reply

ive got a akasa 965 heat sink so i hope thats enough cooling

i will give it ago tomorrow

fingers crossed

thanks again 😀
