I'm getting a new PC next month, and my friend keeps telling me I HAVE to overclock it, but I really don't see the point. I've got the money to buy a beast PC, I don't need it to go faster.
Can anyone explain why he thinks it's so necessary?

I'm getting the i7 4770K with an MSI N680GTX Lightning and 16GB RAM.

Overclocking is not important at all, the cpu is fast enough already. People tell you to overclock because it's an unlocked processor and you are probably getting a good cpu cooler for it so it's easy to get better performance for free. You can search for overclocking guides just to see what the cpu is capable of, you probably could get 4.0 Ghz just by increasing the multiplier.
You really don't need to overclock it, but if you don't want to overclock why get an unlocked processor? If you only want to game just get a i5 and invest in a better graphics card instead.

I'm getting an i7 because I render a lot too. I don't know much about overclocking, but in my opinion it's not something important to do. Maybe in a couple of years when all the new technology comes out and mine can't keep up.
