Hello People,
First off I have very little knowledge of overclocking. I have just built my first system, the spec is shown below:
AMD X2 AM2 4200 Processor
1024 DDR2 533Mhz Ram
Nvidia Geforce 7600GT
550W Colours Power Supply
160GB SATA II Hard Drive
DVD 16X Re-Writer
17” TFT Monitor
ASUS M2N-E Motherboard Nvidia 570 chipset

I would like to start by overclocking my processor which is currently stocked at 2209MHZ a small amount up to something like 2310MHZ.
My CPU and Motherboard temperatures are usually between 28-33 Degrees at Idle. Because I only want a small increase, is it possible to just overclock by changing my FSB in the bios from 200Mhz to 210Mhz or something along those lines. Id have to check what my CPU Multiplier is at but I think it it’s at 11x. Can I overclock this way without having to change any Voltages or any other settings in the bios? Also can I cause any damage doing it this way?

The DDR2 ram i have is at 533MHZ and is only Value Ram not a decent make such as Corsair. Will i be alright upping the FSB to 210mhz without touching any of the ram settings? Because it's only a small amount i know it will up the ram performance a bit by doing this but surely it should be able to handle such a small increase right?! Also by upping the CPU From 2209Mhz to something like 2350Mhz wat sort of increase can i expect in my 3D Mark 06 score because at Stock i get a score of 3332.

Yeh i would prefer to do it myself in the bios though rather then use software on windows. Dunno why just heard it's better to do it all manually in the bios, all i want to do really is to overclock the processor slightly for a small performance gain but don't want to damage my ram at the same time.

Well for older boards there is a program called softFSB that you can use to manually increase the speed of the FSB. But its always better to overclock thru the BIOS. Less of a chance of totally screwing up everything.

You should be ok in just upping it to 210. Overclocking is about trial and error and that isn't much of a jump. You should be able to leave everything else on auto.

Yeh so if i up the fsb to 210mhz that will mean an overall speed of 2310mhz right? on a cpu multiplier of 11. That is leaving everything else on auto and the HT on 5x. The only thing i wuz worried about was my ram cause although im new to overclocking upping the fsb will also increase the ram upto 210 if it was at 200 before won't it?!

Yes, 2,310. You want to keep your memory at a non overclocked frequency, if your motherboard permits. Also you want to keep at fixed non overclocked frequencies your PCI and PCI Express. It is better for the components.
Go into Bios and set the appropriate menu.
You could possibly lower your HyperTransport and try to increase further your frequency.
Make sure Windows is bootable and the machine is stable.
Also check the temperatures. You don't want too high temperatures.

So if i go into my bios and make sure the PCI-E frequency is set at 100mhz and make sure my ram is set to 533mhz which is what it should be at because its ddr2 533mhz Value memory, then all i have to do move the fsb up to 210mhz right? the one thing i don't understand is doesn't moving the fsb up also increase the ram speed? also if i increase cpu to 2310mhz from 2209mhz wat sort of increase can i expect in 3D mark 06?

Increase your FSB 5 MHZ at a time. See if Windows boots fine and check your temperatures. See if Windows is stable.
We have some overclocking guides in these forums.
I recommend you read them also.
If you set your memory at 533 MHZ it will not be increased by the overclock. If you set it at auto, it will be increased to a higher value.

I'm not an overclock expert at all.
What I did was to up the FSB a little at at time 202, 204, 206 etc
After each change I ran for a couple of days - just making sure that all was stable.
The other change you might consider is RAM VOLTAGE - this WILL NOT overclock the ram - but in a lot of cases a slight increase will ensure stability.

Yeh i have been reading up for about 2 days now, find it all interesting just at the moment my system handles all the best games i wanna play such as half life 2, F.E.A.R,Doom 3, Fifa 07 at pretty much max settings so im thinking of waiting till early next year to overclock it, My main Reason i looked into it was because i got a score of 3332 on 3d mark 06 which at first i thought wuz a bit low, eventually i uploaded my scores and compared them with loads of other similar systems. I then realised the score was about right, I think taking my ram upto to 2gb would improve my system more then anything but wanted to play around with just the CPU a small amount to see what increase in score i can get. Thanks for the advice.

When I changed my RAM from 2 512's to 2 1GB's I had to up the voltage. Been stable ever since. Didn't get any really noticable increase in performace with 2GB - just had to have it :)

So just to confirm before i get home 2nite an up my FSB! if i set the ram to 533mhz and PCI-E frequency to 100mhz, i can then up the fsb a little a time without affecting or damaging the ram or gfx card? I have asus Probe 2 to keep an eye on temperatures etc.
