I'm new to the computer world and here in about a month I'm going to build my first computer. It's going to have a pentium 4 2.4 ghz(800fsb). Anyway, I'm interested in trying to overclock it just to learn something new, and maybe to give a little boost but, I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it overclocked. Does anyone know if there is a overclocking for dummies book or is there some website or something that can explain it to someone who has no idea where to begin.

You've come to the right place kid! Let us know when you get it and we'll help you fry it up! . Save some money for Crucial PC4000 ram so you can get it where you want it.

In two months you will have a tough time finding a new 2.4C since they are out of production. A 2.8C works just fine too.

as a matter of interest the man is pointing out he will be building his first pc... i know when i made my first pc i was interested in overclocking it eventually but didnt buy the right pieces to enable overclocking. i know [-peep-] all about intel systems so maybe someone should advise him on what mobo, ram and cpu with best overclocking potential not to mention a good heatsink he should think about getting... lifes a bitch if he has to repurchase a ton of stuff to allow him to overclock or buys a cpu that wont overclock very far..

HERE'S SOME SPEC ON EVERYTHING i'M GOING TO GET . I'm really trying to keep my budget under $400.00. Basically what I'm doing is upgrading the computer I have with a new Mob,cpu, video card, case, and memory. heres my specs tell me what you think.

1)40 gig maxtor hard drive(already have in computer)
2)asus p4s800 sis648fx chipset socket 478( 533, 800fsb)
3)pentium 2.4 or 2.8 ghz (800fsb)
4)nVidia Geforce fx5700 128mb video card( we're not big gamers but we like to play some, {need for speed}, {tony hawk}
5)512 mb memory from corsair
6} linkwood black/silver atx midtower 400w supply

None of these items are to pricy but have good reviews on new egg. The Mobo is $70.00, case is $35.00 nad has plenty of cooling option, 2 fans on back and one on side and one on front. I'll be putting one more whole on the side for another fan, and probally want use the front. Like i said i am cash hendered so i'm trying to find the best for my money. Give me some ideas on what you think about these product. I'll be posting these specs in every area of the community for each part I'm getting.

Abit IS7 - $90.00
2.4C (Retail) - $157.00
Rosewill 9600/256mb - $92.00
256mb X 2 OCZ Premier - $91.00

We're at $430.00 right there. Not enough budget! :frown:

Here' what I would do:

1 - Black Antec Sonata case w/ Thermaltake 420watt Pure Power (case used- PS new)
1 - Abit IC7 mb (used)
1 - 2.8C w/Intel lapped heatsink (Retail-used)
2 X 256mb HyperX PC3500 (new)
1 - ATI 9600XT-256mb (new)

Kind of late in the game to be buying a CPU Intel doesn't even make any more. Why not get the 2.8C? It overclocks higher and cost only a few dollars more.

Send me your 2.4C, I'd like to have a CPU for testing RAM that can exceed 250MHz FSB (I got one of the 2.6C's of the lesser stepping).
