Overclocking NON (K) skylake possible?

Hello

I am going to build a new pc and I realy want save some money where I can on this 1.

Now I have allot of overclocking experiance on both intel and amd, but I dont understand the skylake cpu's it was rumored that the baseclock overclocking was back on skylake?.. Is this realy true because it would make a i5 6400 very interesting compaired to the 6600k.

But I cant seem to find any doing this.

It already have a full custom waterloop so overclocking is kind of a must 😛

No, you'll still need a 'K' model on Skylake CPU's to safely overclock. As you seem to be aware, for the i5 model that is the 6600k.

How do you mean ''safe''
sandybridg, ivybridge and haswell couldn't overclock the baseclock only later with the base clock strap to 133 166 and 200 but still only for the K series.
my question is can you overclock the new skylake cpu's with just the baseclock? like in the old days with the i7 920 etc

It was a poor choice of phrase, sorry about that.

No, you cannot overclock Skylake non-k models like you could in the old days of the i7 920. You need a 'K' model. The reason you couldn't find anyone else doing it is because it isn't an option.

Yes it is, the bclk clock is separated from everything but the ram, and can be done if the motherboard permits. I myself am looking to upgrade and am thinking of going with a i5 6600 and an H170 mobo with adjustable ram settings.

Yes, theoretically you can overclock without a K model. You can up the Baseclock but that's a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE idea as it raises your DMI speed, PCIE lane speeds, etc. Bad things happen.

The max you can with relative stability is probably 105 on a 4770k.

Incorrect, PCIE lanes are still connected to the Baseclock. Refer to the 5th gen intel datasheet.

Skylake is 6th gen not 5th.

Many articles such as this one state that the base clock is seperated. Could you quote where in the data sheet it says that it is still linked to the PCIe bus?

You're right. The DMI has a separate clock speed from the bclk. Misread the datasheet, ggnore.
