Overclocking. ---Please help!

I'm helping a friend overclock his 2500+, and I'm a bit puzzled.

The system is 100% stable at 166mhz at 1.55v, and 100% stable at 186-90mhz at default voltage(1.65), But even at 1.75-1.80v.(have not tried it higher, kinda scary) I can't get it to 200mhz.

I kind of told him it should be an easy oc, and it should be.

I'm thinking that perhaps I'm forgeting something(PSU IS FINE! SO IS HSF) in the bios. Or maybe a jumper on the mobo...

The memory is rated DDR400 and when I set the FSB 166/MEM 200 the system is stable.

The mobo: NF7 rev 2.0 with bios update to v23.

Is it just an unlucky CPU or am I an idiot? And if it's the CPU how come it's stable at 1.55v even after 12h prime95?

that's what I'm thinking, but it does work at 1.55 and even lower...

It's probably the voltage regulators. Try having a house fan blow on them. If you can then get to 200 fsb, you have a good case for rmaing the board. You could also just glue some h-sinks on them, though that would void your warranty.

Have you tried with a lower multiplier? Or is his 2500+ locked?

Also, are you using 2x memory sticks for Dual Channel? DC is very stressful on the memory, and not all ram will work at it's rated settings in dual channel mode. Exactly what ram is it?

AFAIK, the V-regs are the little 3-legged black things, usually quite near the CPU. There's usually 3 or 4 of them.

multiplier is locked.

The memory works at 200mhz(6/5 FSB setting).

Is the scenerio with mem at 200 and FSB at 166 any more stressfull on the mem than the 200 sync setting?

Ah yes, sorry I missed that bit :redface: .

I don't think it's any more stessful on the memory whether it's synch or asynch, but I could be wrong on that.

I don't suppose you can get hold of another Barton to test with? Just to see if it's the Mobo or the CPU itself.

you could just have an unlucky CPU. being happy on a lower Vcore doesn't necessarily mean it'll overclock further. Check my sig, I can't get it stable @ 2.3Ghz even with 1.85V (I'm also too scared to go higher

), yet it only needs 1.575 for ~2.26 😱

I guess that's what I've been asking really.

If it were my own, I'd find another mobo to test it on.

My friend is'nt what I would call a gamer, and untill he needs it, there is no point in OC'ing it. I just wanted to know if there are safeguards on the mobo or in the bios that prevent oc'ing in some way.(CPU disconnect function disabled gives me better results, for example)

ok wait a minute.... WTF is going on? are you trying to hit 200Mhz fsb.... which would have to do with the mobo and the cpu or just OC the cpu?...

which nforce chipset do you have? i'm guessing its not the ultra 400. did you remember to up the chipset voltage? THAT should be the important part. if you have a solid HSF, you can hit up to 1.9 vcore for testing, but i don't recommend you stay up there unless you have a real good HSF.

up the NB volt to the highest it can go... 1.75 i think and then try the 200 Mhz FSB. if that works, check the NB temp and see if you need to worry about cooling. don't worry, you're not going to kill anything for those few testing minutes. so if the mults are locked, you have to up the NB voltage to get higher FSB. that NB will cause more instability problem than you might think. TRUST ME, i know. ferking had to deal with 4 of these thing: 2xnf7, nf7-s, an7. keep a hammer near by.

run the memory 1:1. the voltage regulator consists of 6 transistors and 8 capacitors which are all lined up behind the ports on the mobo. you know, ps2, serial, parallel, audio... and so on. you will also see three coils, wire wound donuts they look like. this is a 3 phase voltage regulator.

so just remember to up the NB voltage and run the memory at 1:1. as long as you have good case cooling, you don't need to worry about cooling the voltage regulator. abit uses quality parts and this is where it should pay off. now if you were going to go past 1.85 vcore, it would a good idea to stick a case fan on top of those.

those boards are great! just up the NB voltage to its max and you should be able to hit ~209 Mhz. if you have one of the later boards, you might even be able to hit 225. 500 Mhz FSB!!!

just remember, if you're not being held back by your memory, keep it at 1:1 and watch the temp on the NB. if its warm to the touch, relax. if not, take the HSF off it and lap the NB chip itself and use some good thermal compound. you'll be set then. you were right, it should be a easy OC. abit nf7 is a great board.

A couple questions:

First, I'm pretty sure that the max NB voltage is 1.7. Is there an easy way to volt-mod it higher?

And second, do bios settings like 'CPU interface', FSB/AGP spectrum, etc. etc. affect oc'ing, and how?

anything is possible, but in your case 1.7 should be more than enough. we don't want to burn the NB now, do we.

so you do have the previous version of the nforce chip. nforce ultra 400 goes up to 1.75 and the ones before it go up to 1.7.

anyway, enable cpu interface as this one does make a difference on the OCing, but leave fsb and agp spectrum at their defaults. some settings need the cpu interface enabled to work, but the other two, i never messed with since they got nothing to do with much.
