Overclocking Problem

Ok my AMD 64 4000+ is almost a year old now and I think it is time to start messing around with it. I am kind of new to overclocking but have done some reading about it and am not totally oblivious to it. My goal is to get my AMD 64 4000+ to at least 3.0GHz from 2.4GHz. I am going to get a 3rd party heatsink in a few weeks here, probably a Zalman 9500. I have been messing around in my BIOS and I changed my FSB from 200 to 217 just to see if it would be stable or not and just out of curiosity. After that I went to 2.8GHz and my computer immediately restarted. Now what would be the cause of this? Is it because it needs more power and needs the voltage uped? Could it be my RAM? I'll post my specs down below but any help would be greatly appreciated!

CPU: AMD 64 4000+
MOBO: BFG Tech nforce4 Ultra
RAM: 2 x 1GB OCZ PC3200 El Platinum Series RAM (RAM Timings: 2.5, 4, 2, 5)
VID Card: BFG Tech 7800GT
 
Try loosening the ram timings and give components more voltage.
So by loosening the RAM timings do you mean slower timings? Also when giving components more voltage, you want to go up very slowly so you don't fry the parts right?
 
loosen them to like 3,4,3,5 and put +0.1 more volts on the ram. Then for the cpu put like 0.1 on to it or so. Continue oc'ing at those volts until you hit a wall then raise again then oc. Make sure you monitor temps. After you have it were you want the oc then slowly decrease the voltage to were its still stable.

I have a doubt you'd be able to get to 3 GHz unless you're really good at overclocking, you've got a sweet cooling system and you got a really good chip. My friend has one of those (except sans IHS) and he's just been able to get it to 3055 with 1.65 volts on his uber mega water cooling system with a 6 inch heatercore. A more likely place to dream about would be 2.8.

Remember to change your HTT multiplier as well so that you keep it at around 1000. No one else mentioned that so I thought I'd add it.
