Iv'e just bought a q9550 because my q6600 has been causing bsod's, and i thought it would be a nice upgrade. I was thinking of trying to get to 3.8 or even 4.0 ghz... but then i realised a slight problem- my ram is only the pc2-6400 kind, which ive never had a problem with before as my other processor's being e6600 and q6600 didnt really need more. But in order to reach 3.8ghz id need the ram at 900mhz if that's correct, and i have 4 sticks of 1 gb each. Im not really sure how far I can push the ram, i know it can go a little bit atleast, however in the past it allways seemed that if i put anymore than 1.9 volts into the ram i would get bsod's. My ram is rated from 1.8 volts up to 2.2volts though.. corsair xms2 pc2-6400 drr2 cas 5.

If i drop the timings from the normal 5.5.5.12 to 6.6.6.18, would this allow for a better overclock? possibly allowing me to reach 900mhz? will that slow things down in a bad way having the timings that high?

any other way around this? im also looking at buying 2x2gb of pc2-8400 ram but its a little bit expensive at 88 pounds, and really id rather sacrifice a bit of speed and save the cash if thats possible. I mean i could settle for overclocking just to 3.4 or 3.5 but it seems like a bit of a waste not to go higher

Set your ram timings to auto or manually relax them as you planned. 900 mhz "should" be reachable with those.
