I'm just toying with OCing just recently (first time yesterday actually) and have a few questions. Guess i'll get my system stuff out of the way first

A7N8X
AMD 2800+ XP Barton
Radeon 9700pro
2x256 PC2700 ram

What i gathered from reading here for a bit is that pc 2700 runs @ 166 fsb. If i were to drop the multiplyer (12.5 default) and raise the fsb, will my ram be fine for a while, while i bump up the fsb? i had it up to 175 fsb and 12.5x for a while and it ran fine in games and playing music, but my whole system crashed while doing the loop on 3dmark2001se. Stock voltage too. Any help would be appreciated :]

Or would it be just plain safer to move to pc3200?

oh ya stock cooling too

holy dogshit 175!!! fsb * 12.5 multi that just suicide!!!
then again your cpu could be gifted, anyways always try atlest 10 loops of pcmark2002 atleast to test stabibility, if itcrashes increase vcore or drop fsb, also moniter the temperature mbm5 best http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ diode shoulden't hit 80 degrees celcious

good luck and happy frying

ALWAYS AIM LOW SO YOU CAN'T BE DISSAPOINTED

huh?

Thats only 2.2ghz...an average barton core cpu could do that...

ok...i am gonna point my finger at the memory...then the cpu...

bump up the vdimm voltage (its in the bios) by .1v...

if this does not get ya stable...then bump up the vcore by .05-.1 that is all that should be necissary for your overclock...

If i put my k6 in a Ferrari it would be faster than your your pentium 4 or Athlon XP

ya been using MBM5 all along for this.

don't hold back on the insults, dunno what i'm fully doing just yet :p

na stick with your ram...it seems to be pretty good if it is doing 175 at stock volts...it'll live...after all pc3200 is just hand selected pc2100 and pc2700 modules...

well got ahold of prime95, been running for a bit now and no hickups yet. but then again no side panels are on and its just sitting at 50 c now. definatly going to need to get better cooling items in there if i'm goign to keep this OC going and have the panels back on. so 175 fsb 12.5x and stock voltage is as far as i'm going..........for now :D

very nice...

umm...the slk 900 or 800 are good...the sk-7 is fine...you will need 80 or 70 mm fans for those...

I would go for the sk-7 in terms of price to performance...i don't quite know what fan size the sk-7 is supposed to use...check before you buy the fan...i think it is 70 mm though...

tee hee woops, looks like i goofed :x

Fried my power supply on sunday. I am guessing with a dvd-rom, cd-burner, HDD, 2 case fans, radeon9700pro and trying to OC. Was using a 350 watt PSU before, got a new one but higher quality. Will i need an even better PSU to be able to OC or will it hold me back?

yes i am this newb at this :(

get a fortron 350 watt powersupply...it is cheep and one of the best powersupplies you can buy!

A bad psu can limit your overclock...sorry to hear that your optical drives died with it :frown:

o...ok i guess i read that too fast!

yes...if you were using a generic psu...it prolly was a pos (no offense but it's true)...get a fortron psu..although it is only 350 watts...it is 350 watts of quality power...it will put out what it is rated for continuosly...other psu's are rated for what they put out at full load...

when i was at the store i bought the case from (it was still under warrenty) so it was going to take 4-8 weeks to get it back to me, so i grabbed an Enermax 350 psu, heard only good things about it, and has a 3 year warrenty.

ps: none taken, i know its a POS thingy, with it under warrenty and when i get it back going to keep it handy as a backup PSU
