So I got myself an Intel i5 4590,I also got a nice Msi Z97 motherboard with it.And yes,I know the non-K intel cpus cant overclock so no sense in a z97 chipset board, but I still got it.So,I researched online about overclocking the non K parts, and a lot of people say it can be done but its all very unclear on how to do it.I went to the BIOS to tried to increase the multiplier like you would normaly but everything is locked on Auto, but then I installed the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and it allowed me to change everything. So instead of just frying my cpu I wanted to ask can it be done? And if yes,how can it be done safely? I also wanted to mention its not something I do for fun,but I would have a benefit of some extra cpu speed!

I just had this discussion lol. Yes you can overclock the non k version but to do this you have to change the base clock frequency and if you do that it changes a mess of other things as well such as memory frequency, HT link speed, northbridge frequency, etc. So even if you mange to find a balance between all those by changing the base clock you will only get a couple hundred mhz out of it at most, so its not really worth it in my opinion.

Agreed. Reminds me of the old LGA 775 days. Where you have to use the FSB to overclock.

Same principle goes with BCLK overclocking, however just like he said, you won't get any high clocks because the BCLK has a min/max of 100/125mhz.

BTW... BCLK x Multi. = Speed so lets say your CPU is turboing to 3.7ghz, 37 multi. x 100 bclk = 3.7ghz.

So,I tried and managed to get only 100 mhz out of it,I messed a lot with the settings and the frequencies and stress tested, until I finnaly got something stable. It spent around an hour just to get that so I didn't want to go for 200 mhz right away but instead tried to test the speed improvement. With the gtx 960 I saw no differences in fps in games,I did get a very small improvement during compression of some files, and rendering just some geometric objects in Cinema 4D,but only a few seconds less in time it took, not worth it considering hours of research and work you have to put in overclocking it.Thanks for your help anyway, the answers were very helpful!
