Overclocking with 430W PSU

I was trying to overclock my 1.2GHz Athlon to at least 1.4GHz but I found that Prime95 fails at 1.4GHz with my Abit KT7A. BTW, I'm using a 430W Enermax Whisper PSU. What is the problem? I have a feeling that it's not a CPU instability issue but a BIOS issue. I am using the latest BIOS, 4A. 4A is supposed to fix instablities at 1.4GHz. Any ideas?

1) What's your CPU temperature before & after overclock?
2) What's your CPU core voltage before & after overclock?
3) Are you upping the FSB at all?

CPU temp: 40oC Idle 45oC Load The latest BIOS does not send idle signals to the processor so it does not cool down much when it's idle.

I'm running at 1.85V

No change to the FSB. I'm taking it one step at a time.

I would really appreciate an answer. Has anyone ever run the Prime95 torture test on an Abit KT7A (RAID) with a AMD Athlon at 1.4GHz?

yep... ive got the same problem
my 1.2 just cant quite do 1.4 stabilly.
it always locks up after an hour or so full load.
1386 @ 154 fsb seems my max (1.85 V) at around 55-58C full lead
what i usually run is
1350 @ 150 & (1.80V) at a very nice 50-54.
even the addition of my testosterone inspiring enermax 550W didnt change the stability of my core. (but it did make everything else better)

i guess some cores just cant cut it beyond a certain speed.

my hope is that when i get a swiftech 462A i can do 1400. this Fop32-1 is ok... but really not good for the vicious summer that us auzzies have (no AC)

I have a currently have a GlobalWin WBK38, an Enermax Whisper 430W PSU, two cases fans and a PCI slot fan cooling my CPU. My max load temps are in the mid 40s. The voltage is at the maximum (1.85V). What is my problem. It's not heat and it's not voltage (or is it?). I have to solve this because after I get a stable overclock, it's off to case modding! Then again, I might as well wait to get the Athlon XP. However, IMO, an upgrade to anything less than an Athlon XP 1800 is not worth the money and the XP is coming out a bit overpriced. I'll just wait 'til 1st quarter 2002 to complete my ultimate PC Hotrod.

if you have upped the voltage and the cpu is still not stable (even at 45 degrees) then I can only assume that you have an 'unlucky' cpu. Do you happen to know what batch stepping it is - AVIA, AXIA, AXIA-R, AHYJA, AHYJA-R etc....

If you got the 1.2 up to or around May/June - then you could possibly have an AVIA stepping chip or earlier, which are not as overclockable as the AXIAs and the ones that followed.

I know I have an AXIA because I remember seeing that as I put the PC together but I don't remember which AXIA. I'm really not in the mood to take off the WBK38 and check. It takes me forever to put it back on again (the clips are very annoying).

I have a feeling it may be a BIOS/software related problem because I can run SETI@Home, Quake III, Unreal Tournament, etc. at 1.4GHz perfectly for several hours. It just bugs me that the Prime95 Torture test fails!

hmmm
well if prime95 fails then your processor obviously aint 100% stable.
gonna have to live with it unless you invest in something like the swiftech 462A or watercooling... even then, sucess is not guarenteed.

another program you really should have a look at is Toast. Mr Raystonn recently did a post about it in this CPU forum. its designed specifically for the athlon/duron line... i.e. it fully utilises all the pipelines the cpu has.

on my system the temp was 2-3C hotter than what it usually gets to running Cure for Cancer all the time. impressive burn in program.

some processors overclock, others dont.
i think (but am not sure) that mines an AVIA... not as good as the AXIA or latter AHRJA.
1350 @ 1.80V very stable
1360 requires 1.85V
1386 appears to be my magical limit
1400 under full load is stable for usually 20-30 mins.

I tried Toast at 1.4GHz and it runs perfectly! Only Prime95 is the problem!! WHY? My temps are low (in the 40s), I have a huge 430W PSU), what is my problem?

now thats wierd...

how long did u run toast for?
what temps did u get?
and how long does it take prime95 to crash your pc?

P.S. try downloading a new version of prime, just to be sure

About an hour. At the end of the hour my temps were at 50oC(higher than even Prime95). Prime95 doesn't crash my system, it just tells me an error has occured and that 0.40<0.49999999966545 something.

have you got all the os and latest bios releases for your system? does your system run prime95 at stock speeds, and are you overclocking by multiplier only?

So, if it runs stock and you are overclocking by multiplier only, then your cpu is unstable in some way and that is it.

If it does not run stock, then you have a bios/software issue.
