Hello, I brought a new Computer from Newegg. Its a CyberpowerPC Ultra 2138 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229361 The problem is that the FX 8120 is overheating. :pfff: The computer shut off 3 times while i was playing games. When i check the temp in h/w monitor it can go from 40 to 65 in idle. I already had someone check the fan & heat sink and put more thermal grease but that didn't help at all. My computer technician told me that they are using a low profile Thermaltake fan and heat sink and its just not keeping the cpu cool and he herd that the FX 8 series runs kinda hot anyway. I do not plan on overclocking but i do need a good after market cooler. I see that the Cool Master Hyper 212 evo is a pretty good cooler but will it fit in my Case??? Any other suggestions would be great!! please help!!! :hello:

Solution

That just sounds like the current cooler is real crap. Anyways have you measured the distance from the socket to the side panel? Best if we know that prior to recommending coolers.

Also pc 1 brings a good point, make sure you clean the existing thermal paste off of the CPU with Isopryl alcohol and cotton swabs. After that just put a nice little pea sized dot in the middle. Anyways I recommend using Arctic MX-2, stuff is pretty cheap in my area, only $4.99 for a 4g tube!
If this computer was bought recently then I would do an RMA or just contact Cyberpower for a replacement.

Here is their email: Cyber_tech2@cyberpowerpc.com

If you cannot get an RMA/Replacement then yes the Hyper 212 EVO will fit if there is enough room in terms of case width.

Edit: If I were you just measure the distance from the socket of the motherboard to the side panel and see how long that is. Based on that I can tell you if it will fit or not.

The CM Hyper 212 is 158.5cm in height so get a ruler and check the height of your case - from the motherboard to the side door - and make sure its around 159cm clearance at least. If it is, you're good to go for the Hyper 212.

Btw, one should never buy any of those pre-built rigs, they're nearly always crap. Just a note for any potential buyers.

Nope, that actually looks better then the one i have in there now lol!! Mines does not have copper pipes , my computer tech told me that the fan and heat sink inside my computer looks more like its for a dual or quad not for a FX series

Solution
Yes my Computer tech told me what he did and it was still idling from 40 to 60 the fan and heat sink sucks for that cpu..Im pretty sure i have enough room for the Hyper 212 EVO its fits in most mid size towers. I know the FX runs hot so at a heavy load 60 doesn't brother me but i would like it to idle at 30ish . The CORSAIR Hydro H80 looks great also

I'm using the logiysis mc3002gx on my 1100t and it is keeping the cpu way cool . it is smller than the 212 does as good a job . My temps now are 22c idle 42c with all cores @100% for 6 hours . Easy to install and dead quiet , I used OCZ Freeze thermal paste .
Overclocked @3.9 never goes over 53c , a good inexpensive silent cooler .

I ALWAYS recommend going high end air cooling if you can afford a closed loop watercooler. Anyways if you are sure you can fit the hyper 212 then go for it. If you are wanting to overclock very high then go high end air cooling and if wanting to push the processor to the max then go custom water cooling which is super expensive.

this is the stock heatsink for AMD3 AND 3+

Haha bet the stock cooler was much better than your current low profile Thermaltake cooler

Anyways is your processor overclocked or not? That will determine what cooler you should get.

My FX 8120 is at stock speeds 3.1ghz but i know that the FX series runs hot so i need something that's going to keep it cool under heavy load. its a 125 watt cpu

Hyper 212 will do just the job for stock clocks and it will cost you very little!

Even at stock clocks the stock cooler is not enough , my son games and the temp goes up to 62c plus , that's why I changed the cooler , plus running WCG B O I N C could not have the cpu use over 70% without temps hitting 58-60c . For light computing stock is fine , if you game , convert video or use any prog that uses the cpu hard you need something elsr . I suggest the one i posted above , low cost , easy install and quiet . And a quality paste applied propely helps .
Good luck

Well technically the stock cooler was designed to run perfectly fine with stock clocks, so I guess the above poster may have had bad airflow or something like that. Either way for stock clocks look no further, the Hyper 212 will do a real good job. Heck, it will also give you a moderate overclock as well!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835999048 there are not alot of reviews on this vs the hyper 212 evo, does your son have a FX 8120 too?

ANY closed-loop water cooler will do the exact opposite. They cool moderatly well, though equivalent air coolers often beat them, but they have a LOT of problems:

1) They have more moving parts, meaning they're more likely to fail.
2) When they do fail, they don't have a huge metal heatsink as backup, so the processor overheats rapidly. (Whereas that hyper 212 could probably keep the CPU working at idle with a broken fan.)
3) If they fail catastrophically, instead of just having plastic flying, they spray liquid all over your commputer's innards.

0verclocked 1090t for the son , overclocked 1100t for me , temps with a 3.9 OC never get over 53 , idle 33c , at stock clocks 22c idle 42c maxed out . It's a real good cooler .
