Overheating I7 4770k to near 100c all the time

So I've had a problem where my friends who have the same GPU as me get a lot better FPS in all games than me. I finally decided to find out what was wrong, and I found out that my CPU temps are idle at 70-80 c and under load at around 99c.

I only have a stock cooler installed as I thought that would be enough to not overheat my CPU, but apparently not. Is there something wrong with my CPU or is overheating like this common with shitty stock coolers?

Solution

What clockspeed is the CPU running at? Also does your case have decent airflow? These temps are not normal, my 4690k at 4ghz idles at around 28C with the stock cooler.

I haven't overclocked or anything so it's the normal 3.50 GHz.

My other components aren't really overheating, so my case should have decent airflow. GPU was 70c at 100% load.

Did you ever take the CPU heatsink off then put it back on again? If so the thermal paste may have been removed. If so replace the thermal paste.

Solution

I haven't touched the CPU cooler after I first installed it so the thermal paste should be fine. I'm gonna try and get myself a new cooler as soon as possible.

It sounds like it could be a defective CPU then, with a 4770k and a stock cooler at stock speeds these temps are very high, pickup some thermal compound and try that first before a whole new cooler.

Alright, I'll re-do the thermal paste today and see if it works. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

Intel CPUs are fine up to ~100, though most of the time you don't want to go above 70. 80C is not smoking temperature but not good for idle temps.

Thank you so much for your help kind stranger! I redid my thermal paste and now I get around 40c idling and like 65c in-game.
Previously my Arma 3 ran at almost 30 FPS at all settings on low, now all on high a stable 60 FPS
