Got the i7-4790K but kept overheating. Got a new 4790K through RMA but still overheating.
I am using a Kraken 31X liquid cooler and it is working fine - thermal paste OK and 2x 120mm system fans OK.

Motherboard GA-Z97M D3H
GPU R9-280X

CPU load <10% temp 75'c-85'c, Kraken fan at 75%, liquid temp 40'c
Just moving the mouse increases +5'c

CPU load 10%-15% temp 91'c-99'c, Kraken fan at 100%, liquid temp 60'c
Simple file transfer or 1-page browsing +10'c

Game: CPU load 25%-50% temp 100+'c Kraken fan 100%, liquid temp 70'c

World of Warships or World of Tanks game results in system halts as CPU overheats.

HELP PLEASE!!

Sounds like a bad thermal paste job for sure. Re seat the cooler and make sure you clean off any thermal paste with alcohol and a q tip before re applying new paste. A pea or grain of rice size should do the trick. Too much is just as bad as too little. I have an i7 4790k as well but with a hyper 212 evo air cooling solution and my temps are way lower.

These are idle temps with no overclock, and not very good airflow.

EDIT** Even under CPU stress test, I rarely see jumps higher than 70c. While gaming, I normally see 40-50C. The thermal paste should do the trick
