Overheating Issues

Hi guys. I am new to this forum but I am a frequent visitor to Toms Hardware and I was wondering if one of you might be able to help me with a problem I am having. I just put together a new system with the following specs:

Asus a7a266 Motherboard
AMD 1.2 ghz Athlon Processor 266 FSB (with AMD preassembled fan and heatsink)
256 Megs Crucial PC2100 DDR Sdram
Midtower case with 300 watt power supply and rear case fan

These are the new parts. I also have a Geforce2 MX video card if that could be relevant. The problem I am having is that even with all the fans, my motherboard keeps giving me overheating errors. When I first power on my pc its fine for a while but as I use applications or play games the temperature on my cpu keeps on rising. So far the max I've let it get to is about 150 degrees fahrenheit but I would imagine that it might climb higher than that if I let it. Do any of you know what the maximum safe temperature is for a 1.2 Athlon? Is what I am experiencing normal? If not then what might I do to fix this? I put together a 500mhz AMD system a few years back but it didn't need near as much cooling. After seeing the video done on this site showing the Athlon burning up I dont want to take any chances. Thanks for any help you can provide!!!

P.S. I am not sure if my power supply is AMD approved so could this be the cause? Thanks!!!

Are you sure the HS/F is on properly?? Does it do that with the case open?? What thermal transfer did you use on the CPU?? The PSU could have something to do with it. I have a non-amd approved 300 watt PSU and it runs fine i have a rear case fan blowing air in and the psu takes that air out kinda like a circle type of thing. I think the thunderbird's usually crash at 65* c. Dunno what that is in *F.

I have the exact same setup (as far as the parts you named). My cpu temps run in the 54C(idle)-60C(under load) range. What program are you using to monitor your temps? What bios revision are you using for your mobo? What exactly is your fan situation/configuration?

I was using Asus Probe to monitor my temps but then I turned it off but the built in temperature gauge on my motherboard was still giving out readings of 67C at full load. I used whatever compund it was that came with the fan. I bought a boxed AMD processor so the fan, heatsink, and compound were all provided by AMD. I have tried several combinations of cooling. My case came with a front fan and I purchased a rear case fan. I've tried it with all 3 fans running and then just the rear and cpu fan but I get about the same results each time. It puzzles me but I'm sure there must be something I haven't done right. Thanks for your help guys!!!

Ive never used an asus, but all over the net people report that asus probe reads approx 10C higher than the actual temp, try downloading motherboard monitor, I cant remember the homepage but you can get it from my site

even if the temperature readings dropped 10C it seems like it would still be running a bit warm, for my taste anyway. but i think at that point, buying a better hsf would do the trick.

did you try to see what the temp is with your case fully open?

Mmmm, what's your case temp? Ambient room temp? And, as stated above, what happens when you take the side off your case?
My cpu temps are based on a case temp of 29-30C with an ambient room temp of about 24-25C. I'm using a Volcano II with generic paste and a ND-8 (?) fan from nexfan.

you proablay ahve ari flow problems becuase i have a 1.2 on a fic ad-11 baord and it is running at the highest of 50 degrees C. and that whas when my rum was pretty hot in the sense you had to have fan on you to sleep.

these temps where reached by running folding at home for 8 hours on night
