Overheating possible damage?

Hi! I just built a new computer, currently using the stock cooler and waiting for the new cooler to come in the mail any day. I regularly monitor the cores of the cpu to make sure they do not overheat, they usually idle around 30's C, and under load (watching twitch, playing a non-cpu intensive game, etc.) they are around mid 40's C sometimes a core reaching 50 C. While i was watching netflix the computer and mouse started to lag, I immediately checked the cores and they spiked to around the mid 50's C and low 60's C. After continued monitoring some cores shot to around or on 70 C and immediately decided to press the power button, seeing from the continued heavy lag that the cpu wasn't getting cooled efficiently.

My question is did i damage my cpu? I know that any temp. that to goes up to 90 C can possibly damage a cpu, and u usually want it to stay below 70. I did not hear, nor smell anything out of the ordinary and case air seemed to be cool on the inside. I might be overreacting on this but i never had this happen before and wanted to make sure. Thank you for reading.

intel and amd cpu now and mb have thermal safty if the cpu gets to hot before it cooks the rig would have shut down. if this is an intel build check that the cpu cooler legs are locked in..a lot of time the push pins are not locked or they under heat load can losen up and the cooler can fall off the cpu.
