hey i have recently found out obout overclocking but i dont just want an extra 200mhz i want t turn my average 2.8ghz into a 3.8 monster.

THe problem is what cooling? because this is one ll of an overclock and i dont now which is bter water or fan. Also what brad to use. Finally i'm also majorly overclocking my graphics card so see the 3d overclocking section for details...

THanx

First off, please list your component specs. Motherboard, RAM,CPU,Power

supply. These all affect what kind of overclock you'll get. It's possible that

there isn't enough cooling in the world, for your CPU to hit 3.8.

What type of P4 is it. I have a northwood 2.8 400FSB here that is currently overclocked to 3.7 on STOCK cooling and it is extremely stable, i didn't even have to up the voltage at all! So as for cooling i would probably stick with stock....

I'm not sure what psu i have. but have 1gb ddr pc3200 ram. A geforce 6600 256mb by aopen. my computer is the uk versionof the acer aspire t310 if that helps.

il find out what type of pentium 4 i have.

thanks keep posting

If it is what you say then it's a Prescott-1M based core and the board chipset is an SiS661FX.

Given it's a pre-built Acer, at a guess I'd say there are virtually no provisions for overclocking but without seeing it it's hard to say.

I would say that your probably right. SIS aren't very good chipsets, either.

it let me overclock my graphics card. and on setup it says you can modify the clock frequencies and voltages. Rember mine is the uk version which i think isdifferent from the us one.

what cooling would work best?

thanks

I doubt that you will get your CPU to 3.8GHz but it is possible. You will deffinately want good cooling if you have a Prescott. I have the 2.8 Northwood C (800FSB and HT). I have mine set to 250fsb with the memroy on 5:4 divider (DDR333) so that the memory is actually running at DDR400 after the overclock. 250fsb gives you 3.5GHz which is likely atainable if you can keep it cool enough. Fortunately for me Northwoods don't get as hot as Prescotts. I wouldn't suggest adjusting the CPU voltage until you see how far your CPU will go on stock voltage.

Graphics card overclocking is completely different to CPU overclocking. I'd recommend you read some guides first before you try anything - it seems like you are going in blind. I am in the UK.

Find out what mainboard your system uses, frankly, pre-built systems aren't ideal for overclocking at all. Any enthusiast overclocker will be using custom specially selected components.

If you're using air one of the latest Zalmans will do it. If noise isn't a problem anything big and copper with a large high RPM fan will be ok. Vapochills are meant to be quite good too.

IM using an MSI i845 chipset, seems to be pretty good. I'll cpuz verify my cpu running at 3.8 from 2.8 if anyone wants? (superpi 32m stable!) All on stock cooling! It's the 2.8 that had a 400fsb and i havent even had to up the voltage. Seems to be a very overclockable chip!

I'm planning to do the same with my P4C 2,8 (except for my ram, I'll buy some OCZ Gold GX XTC PC4000 which will allow me to keep my ratio at 1:1). I think I'll buy the Thermalright Xp90C, will I be able to reach 3,4 ghz or even 3,5 ? And whats your cpu cooler at this moment ?

Now about the voltage, which is yours ?

Edit : at this moment, my cpu is a little overclocked at 3,01 ghz and I get 26C in idle and arround 45C in burn with the original cooler (Intel box) if that can help you answering me about my future oc.

At 3.5GHz my 2.8 Northwood C runs stable at stock 1.525v. I can probably get around 3.7GHz if I really want to push my CPU. I don't feel as comfortable overvolting as other guys do. Some guys push the voltage to 1.7 but I don't think that would actually add much to the possible overclock. I was running my CPU at 3.64 for a while on 1.550 but I started getting some weird problems with my sound so I slowed it back down to 3.5.

I could obtain that overclock on the stock cooler but I never left it there for very long because I didn't want it to get too warm. Now I have a Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu.

The temps you are getting seem a bit too low for a stock heatsink. Either you are using it in a really cold room or your bios is reading on the low side. Unless of course if my bios is reading high.

I get low to mid 30s C at idle if I leave the fan at full speed. It goes up to around 58C when I am playing a game. Of course all of that depends on how warm it is in the room and how fast I have the case fans going (I have a fan controller).

Your possible overclock would depend of the quality of the chip you have. From what I know it seems like 3.4-3.5 is a realistic goal. The stock voltage for your CPU can give you an idea of the quality of you chip. If yours is rated at 1.550 it might not overclock as well as mine.

My comp is in a cool room in the basement so I think my temps are right. However I cant tell you at what temperature it is because I dont have a thermometer in the room I am.

According to Asus Probe, my voltage is at ~1,6 and I haven't changed anything in the bios, I think it's at Auto.

Does anyone know what model Northwood mine is? It's the 2.8 with 400FSB, and i can't seem to find any info on it anywhere :|

It seems to be revision D1? Anyone know anything about these?

It's sounds like a Willamette, but on Intel site, they don't even list a

p4 2.8 400FSB. :?

Yeah it is pretty crazy!! I really want a water cooling set up and some high quality ram and a decent cool case for it so i can see just how far these Northwoods can be pushed, i got mine to 3.8 on stock cooling!
