I'm planning on buying the Phanteks TC12DX CPU cooler to go with my Intel 4790K CPU and Asus Z97 Pro WiFi MBO. I have looked at MANY CPU coolers and their reviews, and this one satisfies the criteria I have set (more cooling, less noise, smaller size, lower price, better design, nicer appearance, higher quality, easier installation) to the highest degree.
The problem is that the two PWM fan cables are ridiculously long as you can see here :
and can't be unplugged from the fans (that is they're built-in) as you can see here :
The cpu fan headers on this motherboard are located right next to the CPU slot (above it to the right) :
so I have an excess of at least 30cm (for each fan) of thick white cable which will stand out like a sore thumb in the middle of that black motherboard.
So for the sake of appearances I have to hide away that excess cable length somewhere or get rid of it. Several ideas on how to do this have occured to me :
1. wrap it around the base of the cooler so it's hidden from view under the cooler - this might turn out to be a VERY bad idea if contact with the heatpipes melted the cable insulation and caused a fatal short circuit
2. wrap it around the frame of the fans, that is inside the side groove and under the metal wire, which would be less fugly than having it hang around but still fugly
3. hide it between the motherboard tray and the motherboard (I've seen this in some cases but this cable might be too thick)
4. hide it behind the motherboard tray
5. cut it to size by removing a piece of cable and then soldering and reinsulating the cut ends (I'm not experienced with this but I know someone who is and would likely do a nice and clean job)
So which course of action would you suggest ?
