Hello. I'm hoping someone can answer a question for me about two older CPU's.

One is a P4 2.4 and the other is a Core 2 VPro (Duo) 3.0 (what shipped with the Dell Optiplex 755). The differences might not be that huge but I'm looking for anything anyone can tell me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

P.S. If you're thinking about asking what the system will be used for, don't. I know that sounds weird but just trust me on this one.

If you wanted a general idea of the performance difference, the 2GHz Core2Duo ran circles around the dual-core 3.6GHz Prescott P4 when it launched. That's how badly the P4 got outclassed by just about anything else.

Just for fun, I went to see what Anand's CPUBench had in it...

Core2 E4500 (2.2GHz dual-core with 2MB cache) comes out 10-20% ahead of the Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (3.46GHz dual-core P4 with HT and 4MB cache) in most benchmarks.

One of the slowest Core2 chips ever made beats one of the fastest Pentium 4 ever made.

What would you like to know? The P4 is a single core chip with hyperthreading. The Core 2 is dual core but without hyperthreading. The Core 2 is architecturally superior, clocked higher, and has 2 physical cores.

I know that's the better one. But I'm looking for some kind of specifics.

The P4 and Core2Duo are in completely different leagues.

The Willamette (first-gen) P4 did not consistently outperform the 1GHz P3 until it reached 2GHz... completely pathetic. Northwood improved things somewhat and Prescott mostly failed to yield anywhere close to expected improvements.

When Core2 came out, it obliterated the P4 across the board.

Okay, another related question.
This time, a Pentium D 3 Ghz vs. a Core 2 Duo E8400 3 Ghz.

What can you tell me about those two?
