P4 2.53ghz with Gigabyte 8ik1100 MBO, i875p

Ok i have the below computer and its starting to get sluggish and thinking of overclocking.

1. Is it possible ?
2. Whats the best to overclock?
3. Is it worth it ?

I'm not an expert nor a novice, just after advice.

P4 Northwood 2.53ghz
Gigabyte 8IK1100 rv1.0 MBO i875P
2gb memory 4*512mb DDR PC2700 333mhz (Dual channel)

At the moment i have never overclocked and have it running at

Core Speed 2545mhz
Multiplier x19
FSB 134mhz
Bus Speed 535.9mhz

Any help will be much appreciated !

I don't know that motherboard, but I assume it allows you to adjust your FSB speed. You should easily be able to go to 166 MHz (and probably more) on standard voltage with that chip for something over 3 GHz.

There's a P4 overclocking sticky post at the top of this forum you should read and it'll give you step by step instructions.

Like a fool i just changed it to 155 and my computer failed. i've reset CMOS and will move up gradually. I've set it too 137 for the time being. Will i have to change the voltage settings to the cpu at all ?? With regards CPU-Z my chip is 1.584v.

You can up the core a little bit, but don't overdo it... The Northwoods should be kept below 1.7 volts as I recall or you risk "sudden Northwood death syndrome"

I'm surprised it wouldn't take the 155 speed. You may be running into a problem with overclocking your memory. You should set your memory multiplier to 1:1 while you see how far your chip will go, then figure out your max memory speed and timings.

Same with the other busses... lock the PCI in at 33 MHz. and the AGP at 66 MHz. You want to eliminate as many constraints as you can so you can figure out how far your processor will overclock.

I think its a lot to do with my heat problems, was having idle temps of 38-45c and load temps of 55c. I'm getting a Zalman CPU fan, an exhaust fan and a new PSU 485w Enermax.

This will hopefully help me out and get at least 3ghz.

Ok i've got a new fan etc and a Graphics card my system is as follows.

Gigabyte MOBO 8ik1100
P4 2.53ghz Northwood
Zalman CNPS9500 CPU fan
2gb *4 512mb 2.5 3 3 7
XFX 6800GS 256mb
485w Enermax Noisetaker PSU

I can get FSB 141 @ 2686ghz, vcore 1.58, Mem 2.5 3 3 7, temp 37c-48c.

Anything after this becomes unstable ! Any help on what i should do next.
