P4 2.6C WONT OVERCLOCK PAST 3.120 GHZ

Im trying to overclock my P4 2.6C to atleast 3.25ghz but it fails prime95 when it gets over 140fsb (3.120ghz CPU Clock). I have removed the stock thermal pad on the CPU HSF and sanded / polished the base to a shine then applied cheap Unick thermal paste, and the same with the chipset.

When i set the FSB to 150 (3.250ghz) it fails prime95 after 1 minute or so. I have upping the vcore from 1.5250 all the way to 1.5850, it still isnt stable, iv tried 1.600v and it wouldnt post, suggesting its not the problem.

I watch the tempratures in the asus probe utility while using prime95 - it gets to around 58 before failing, which isnt so hot since when my cpu is at 3.210 it hits 62 sometimes. (i live in australia and its really hot over here - high 30's and low 40's)

I have locked the PCI/AGP bus, i have set my ram to the '333' option which runs the ram at 400mhz when the fsb is at 150, i have just about everything, what else could it be?

WTF all you do is recomend the IS7 to people...thats not the answer to lifes problems...you would probably tell starving children in africa to sell their adobe huts and buy IS7s.

Well if those damn starving children would just buy a computer they wouldn't need to worry about food anymore. And an IS7 would give them a great price/performance ratio with nice stable overclocking. Just what a starving ethopian needs.

Iraq used all p4 c systems with MSI boards, and you see what happened to them? Thank god their voltages were so unstable that their overclocked systems couldn't use their fake weapons of mass destruction against us.

Of course they were prolly attempting to use 127 usb devices with windows, and it crashed right at the last second of launch.

honestly though...you dont answer peoples questions by telling them to buy a new board...

Increase your vdimm voltage and loosen your timmings...

CPU Cooler - Stock P4C Cooler (Non Copper Base Version), thermal pad removed then base sanded and polished to a mirror finish. Cheap Unick thermalpaste used.

Chipset Cooler - stock with pad removed, Cheap Unick thermalpaste used.

The Case has 6 fans, 2 front, 2 read, 1 over the video and one on the pannel blowing right over the cpu.

When clocked @ 2.85GHz it hits under 55ºc in prime95 torture test. (Sometimes 52ºc)

I have tried the CPU VCore @ 1.7 - still failed.
I have tried the ram @ 2.85v with lowest timings, and even set the ram to the '266' option (ratio).

What else is there i can do - nothing gets it past 3.120GHz

The board cant be the issue - iv seen a review of it - they got the fsb above 1200!!!
 
i've had the same problem, P4c800 mb, 2.6c, OCZ 512mb DDR533. Actuall it just started locking up today!! it was woking fine and passing Prime 95, so maybe it's somehting to do with the mother board. I'm thinking of putting the origional BIOS 1002 back in, maybe something changes settings with the new ones. I now have mine a 3.0, but i'm going to put it back at 3.1 if i can get it to run stable again, lol.

OverKill is not defined by the power you use, but by the power you have to spare....

Could it be the ASUS boards are fussy with overclocking? Iv heard of the P4 2.6C reaching speeds of 3.6 with the stock cooler and voltage, could this mean the batches vary in overclock-ability THAT MUCH? The most common boards they use to do it is the ABit boards - could this prove that the ASUS boards are fussy in overclocking? My 2.6c with my ASUS P4P800s wont get to 3250 / 1000 / 250 no matter what! Even with 1.7 vcore... but it is stable at 3120 / 960 / 240 with vcore at about 1.5875? (below 1.6)... i thought it was just my chip or components that couldnt overclock...
 
BATCHES TO VARY THAT MUCH!! Asus boards rules at overclocking. My old P4P800 reached 330FSB with a copper heatsink on the northbridge. my last 2.6C required 1.7V to run at 3250mhz, while the one before that required 1.475 to run at 3250mhz.

"Asus boards rules at overclocking" - i hope so! they have been good in the past, im just eliminating the posibilities... and checking if anyone else has issues with the ASUS P4P800 Series... my 2.6c wont stay stable at 145fsb even at 1.7v, what bios settings do you use? while your first processor that required 1.475v - that would be one of those rare good (first) batch processors that can reach 3.6ghz with ease... dam... anyhow i still cant get it to run at 3.250...

By the way - when i mean stable i mean in Prime95 for about 30 minutes - thats what i mean... at 3.25ghz it fails within 1 minute...

Wait you have the P4P800s, well then that board is actually based on the older i think i848p chipset, so it's running at 800FSB, which is already overclocked by stock, it's rated for 533. Your problem is your motherboard, get the standard P4P800, you probably could find it around 100 bucks now in the US.

huh... they call it a p4p800s for a reason...it supports 800mhz fsb, however it is castrated, and only allows the memory to run single channel. The 848p is no older than the 865/75's it was release at about the same time if not later than they were as a budget solution for 800mhz fsb chips.

didn't you read that tomshardware article on cheap solution of hyperthreading CPU. it's released after after i865pe infact, but it's based on the older 533FSB chips, therefore it's overclocked at stock speeds. Read it in the mobo section.

uh, you got your numbers wrong, 140FSB should be 240, etc, for a 2.6C. You might be running into a chipset limit.

i understand what you are saying but its not a limiting factor of the chipset (maybe the board).

The board is based on the i848pe chipset - i read its based on the i865pe chipset without the second memory channel - it shows because the chip is placed on a 45º angle like the i865's and all other dual channel memory boards, meaning its a cheaper version of the i865pe, not a overclocked i845pe, SECOND - iv read a few sites where they got the chipset to reach 1200mhz fsb with an unlocked P4c processor - do you think its really an already overclocked chipset? also albatron has the same chipset in use in a similar board - it reaches 1200fsb also...

At first i did suspect it was an older i845pe chipset with a higher (overclocked) FSB spec, but it seems not... what do you think?

Currently im running my chip at its limit - 3120mhz / 960 240 and it passes prime easily within or under 55ºc, im still stuck at that limit... what else could i try?
 
Could it be the temprature (55ºc max in prime tourture) is mis-read and is really at a higher temp and causing instability? Iv tried extreme voltages and poor timings for ram ('266' CL 3-4-4-8 @ 2.8v) and 1.7v vcore for the CPU - no luck. Iv tried the turbo on and off for cpu and mam on and off also - no help... what else is there to try?
 
Update: I can run Prime95 at 245fsb (3.18ghz, 1.6v) with the following ram settings:

'266' (~160/320mhz actual clock speed)/ CL 3-4-4-7-8 / MAM Off

If i set my ram to anything higher it will fail prime within minutes or even seconds. With the settings listed it lasted atleast 4 test lines of prime95 - alot longer then any other settings @ 245fsb.

Could this mean the northbridge and its memory controller be at fault causing the instability? Since it will only accept a slower ram speed? Could it be the chipset's temprature may be too hot for its liking? Would that be the fault? Anyone got any opinions here? Could it be getting too hot? Should i buy or install a better Chipset cooler or better thermal paste?
