Is this an upgrade worth while:
from P4 prescott 2.8Ghz FSB800 1MB

to P4 prescott 3.2Ghz FSB800, 1MB ?

Both are S478. Im curious if that would make a worthy mini-upgrade for me at the moment. I will be building a whole new system in the fall.

This is the rest of my hardware:
1gb ddr400 3200
GF 6800LE , opened 16pipes + clocked, so its matches 6800GT
Mobo ASUS P4V800-X
Thats all the relevant stuff.

Im considoring this because I was offered a great deal on a brand new 3.2Ghz.
Any advice is appreciated

I don't think his motherboard is the best overclocker....maybe a new board is the solution.

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

If it's cheap, buy it. You can always sell yours. You will see some improvement.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

I would get a motherboard that would OC instead. The Abit IS7 maybe? SOmeone correct me if my model number isnt correct.

Ok guys, no offence but you´re taking it overboard. I appreciate the advice but im not going to overclock the cpu. Im getting a brand new system in the fall. Ill just buy the 3.2 and sell my 2.8.

The main reason is that i get the 3.2 real cheap and I feel like the 2.8 is limiting my game performance with my overclocked geforce 6800. I think so atleast since I have a friend with 3.2ghz and a worse graphicscard then mine but same game runs far more smoothly on his system. Our systems are identical except the graphics and cpu, hes got some FX5900.

For less than $100.00 you could get a new MOBO and that would probably be money better spent. Hey guys if im wrong tell me im wrong, but think about the Abit IS7"I think thats the model" compared to what he has now.

Your CPU is not the problem. You wont notice a difference between the two. Im not a gamer, but I really dont think that the CPU is the issue.

In a few game at low resolution the CPU can be the bottleneck

Asus P4P800DX, P4C 2.6ghz@3.25ghz, 2X512 OCZ PC4000 3-4-4-8, MSI 6800Ultra stock, 2X30gig Raid0

I don't think it will lend a huge difference in gaming performance, but if it's a good deal then go for it. It will speed up other stuff, and will likely have a small impact on the gaming as well.

I have never OC cpu´s, nor do I want to OC my current 2.8 taking chances as a first timer. I can get the 3.2 for about 130USD. This is just a small thing before I get a whole new AMD system in the fall.

then just wait! ebcause it wont even be worth the 30-50$ investemnt IMO.

Btw you can reaaaally safely without taking any chance oc the 2.8 wich is 14X200 close to 3.2 using 14 X 230 =3.22ghz.
All you need is DDR466 memory and to go in the bios set the FSB to 230 and voila! You could buy new to go with your future AMD...

Ok I know your dont want to OC so just wait...

Asus P4P800DX, P4C 2.6ghz@3.25ghz, 2X512 OCZ PC4000 3-4-4-8, MSI 6800Ultra stock, 2X30gig Raid0

Before you get your new system in the fall... try OCing this one. It would be good practice for you. And the only way for it not to be your first time is if you try it once. You will be amazed at how easy it is to do... and at how dummy proof it is.

I give up!

I think that it is very unlikely the 5900 wil outperform the 6800 with 400 MHz CPU speed difference. Are you by any chance referring to half life 2? In this game the 5900 will go into dx8 mode, and yes, it will run smoothly. Might also do that in other games.

The game is World of Warcraft...i just dont get why he gets better fps then me...maybe something I did in a previous life =P

I mean WoW is rediculously low demanding when it comes to system specs.

PS. What brand u recommend for mo-bo, MSI or ASUS? Been told that MSI is better for gaming pc´s.

I would recommend MSI for sure on a gaming PC... but that is just my own personal preference.

I agree with you, but he is set on not overclocking. Your on track, but I was just considering around $100.00 total. BTW im the one that mentioned the Is7

Try turning off pretty graphics options. He's probably running it better because his isn't being drawn as pretty.

Do internet connections affect framerates for online games? (I'm a single-player gamer myself, so I wouldn't know.)
