P4 3.6GHz "Prescott" cooling issues

I've spent two months, many hours and $ trying to optimize cooling of my new P4 3.6GHz system. After buying a 2nd case suggested by Intel, and trying two CPU coolers, the best temperature I've achieved is 57C at idle, on a cool day - wait until summer! If someone knows of a tried and tested solution for better cooling, please let me know. I'm driving an ASUS P5AD2 Premium, Corsair XMS2 (533) and a cheap graphics card while the PCIX market matures. I can tell you the Gigabyte CPU cooler (PCU21-VG) dropped the temp from 65C to 60, and the Thermalright XP-120 dropped it to 57C (all on cool days at idle according to BIOS).

FYI: The Thermalright XP-120 will work with the ASUS P5AD2 Premium MOBO with their 775 adapter and longer screws than what comes with the adapter.

Lol, it seems that these days every other post on the CPU topic is about overheating prescotts!

But wont it thermally throttle down if too hot.
I suspect it will run just fine year round, even if it gets close to 70c.
Prescotts run hotter, but also handle the heat better than other models.

D0 Scotties throttle down P at 78C...NOT GOOD! Anyway, Prescott might have been an alright Workstation CPU if it didn't run so damn hot (10 months after launch nonetheless!!!!). E0 Scotties are even worse (74% throttling at 77C, that means it's OFF 74% of the time at peak usage in a warmish case).

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

my advice: i wait till intel has it's heat troubles going away

in the past the athlons had a similar problem, so they rearranged the core. (don't know by head anymore which one it was fron t-bred to palomino????) and so their heat problem was solved

to be good intel will have to make a similar step

so i wait till they did that and as long as that takes, i stay with my older p4 :lol:

That is wise, because you never will have the very best and fastest, at least not for long.
And there is no perfect solution available without quirks and glitches, the trick is to know as much as you can about them, and prepare to deal with them with the technology that is available.

Well I just traded a 2.8 northwood for a 3.0 prescott . ( socket 478 )
I was sick when I first changed it . Heat was up , performance was down . It was 50c at idle and 65+ under load . Stock . You could smell the damn thing .

Anyway heres what I did to mine . Got a tip here , to turn the cpu voltage down . Stock is 1.4 , I set it to 1.325 . I turned my case fans around to blow out , I all ready had a Volcano +7 copper cooler on the cpu , and I addes one of those slot type fans to blow out the back of the case .
I run it stabil at 3513 , and the temps are 26c / 39c idle and it gets around 52 cpu under load . I ran prime 95 and throttle watch . I went thru 5 sets of tests ( torture test ) temp got to 60 cpu , but it did not show that it throttled down . This aplies to a socket 478 , so dont know if it will help you or not .
