P4 A or B

Since I fried the raid on my Athlon board and need to replace the motherboard. I’m looking at selling my xp2000 chip and DDR ram and going for p4 with rambus. Am I right in thinking that I should go for the fastest p4 A CPU? My reasoning is that with a higher multiplier (24x on the one I’m looking at) and lower FSB (100 for the A's) I should be able to push the chip much more than if I went for a 2.533B p4.

Thanks in advance

SN

-Edit: Any ideas for the new motherboard as well? It MUST have raid, I would like 6 pci and be for it to be good for overclocking. Sound and that sort of thing does not matter. I'm thinking of the asus P4T533-R. Is this any good? Anyone using this mobo? Thanks again.

Now thats what I want to know!
Edited by secretninja on 08/31/02 05:28 PM.

OK, the 1.6A, 1.8A, and 2.0A all have similar top speeds when similar cooling is used. The 1.6A should do 2400MHz at 150MHz FSB, the 1.8A should do 2400 at 133MHz, the 2.0A should do 2400MHz at 120MHz bus speed. Now, can the 2.0A go to 2666MHz at 133? Probably less than half will. Can the 1.8A go to 2700MHz at 150? Probably less than a third will. This is on stock cooling though, water cooling gets you maybe another 150MHz.

Now, I've heard the 2.2A is on a newer core revision, I don't know. The 2.4A should be on the latest core revision. 24x133=3200MHz (133 is actually 2/3 of 200, eg 133.3 continuous). Can you get 3200MHz out of the 2.4? Probably with a peltier or evaporative cooling (vapochill?). Possibly on water cooling. Not likely on air cooling, unless you have a heatsink half the size of your case and a 300mm fan!

Thanks for the info. Do you think I should go for the 2.4A or a 2.53B? The system will be water cooled. Im going to go for the P4T533-R. Now to find some ram so far can only find 512 rambus 1066 for £200! Bit much at the mo, and also I think this board uses the 32bit bus so I may have to put up with 256MB which is a bit pants. but I cant find a better board yet (its hard enough to find on that is not DDR!).

Now thats what I want to know!

The 2.4. You couldn't push a 2.53 all that high with a board that tops out just past 150MHz FSB.

Cool. As for the mobo i've been seeing some bad stuff on it so i'm not going for it any more. GA-8IHXP is ment to be quite good. Also it has normal rdram (16bit) so I can now have 512MB.
Thanks for all your help.

I like the GA-8IHXP, it has the best features. Still limited to a tad over 150MHz FSB, the 2.4A would get you higher clock speed with water cooling than the 2.53 on that board. If you're very luck, you might just hit 3.2GHz at 133MHz FSB with the 2.4 and water.
