P4C800 -E RAID question

I've recently started a build of a new system that includes a P4C800-E
Deluxe and twin 36.7 WD Raptor S-ATA hard drives. I planned on an Intel
RAID 0 configuration with the 2 serial drives when I found out that one
of the drives was DOA from New Egg. I have since RMA'd the drive back to
New Egg and expect it's replacement to arrive sometime next week.

Can I go ahead and install all my software now and later on install the
second drive when it arrives and then configure a hardware striped set
utilizing both drives with the ICH5r (without re-installing all the
software)?

I am using the Win 2K operating system and wonder if software RAID will
offer the same performance increase as hardware implementation with the
ICH5r.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Big Bear,
Setting up the array will wipe anything you already have on the HDs.
You'll have to wait to do your definitive installation until you
receive the replacement drive.
I'm not an expert on RAID performance, so I can't answer your question
about software RAID, but it doesn't seem intuitive that it would work
as well. Even if it did, I'd guess that it would hog CPU cycles much
worse than a hardware RAID.
