Hi, I have a P4VP-MX board which seems to hang when the CD or DVD drive
is accessed in XP. Tried everything except swap the motherboard out but
it still does it. When we cleared the CMOS the machine worked fine for
2 1/2 hours and then started hanging again. During that time it had no
problem with either of the drives.
During the time that it was running okay, managed to get the machine
hooked upto the net and install the latest bios for the board, but this
hasn't helped.

So, any ideas?

How are the two drives jumpered ? If they are both Cable Select, then
you need an 80 wire 40 pin connector cable. If they are Master and
Slave, you can use either an 80 wire or a 40 wire cable. Perhaps
your problem is related to how they are jumpered. Personally,
I prefer only 80 wire cables for the IDE drives.

It is also possible the controller on the CD or DVD drive
is hanging up, and not the motherboard.

I would try to test the drives one at a time. Place just the
CD drive on the end connector of the cable. Set the drive to
Master and see how well it works. Repeat the exercise for the
DVD drive. This will help identify which drive might have a
defect.

You can test the motherboard by using a hard drive on the
cable, in place of the CD or the DVD. If the hard drive works
with no problems, then the motherboard is probably OK.
