Hi Guys,

Very frustrated and what I thought was a simple problem has turned out to be a nightmare.

First of the Components:

P5B Deluxe Mobo,
E6850 CPU 3GHZ
2GB OCZ DDR2 800Mhz Ram
2 HDD 's SATA one is 120GB the other 160GB

I opened the box put the components together and switched on. CPU came up and said not recognised, went to Asus website upgraded BIOS to 1216 (the latest) and CPU worked fine.

I went to BIOS set up, Checked all components were recognised by the Mobo and everything was fine. I could see the HDD's in AHCI mode and IDE mode.

So i pop in XP and its starts to load up (initial XP phase) but as it is supposed to goto the "Choose the drive you want to install it on, i get the dreaded BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!

i cannot get past this point.

BIOS is updated to 1216
BIOS can see HDD's and ram is running fine.

what is the Problem??????

someone plsss help!

Does it always fail at this EXACT point, and if so, how many tries?

Your DVD/CD drive, SATA or IDE?

What are the temperatures reported in the BIOS?

Is it failing at the exact moment it tries to first access the HD's and only then?

Also what exact model OCZ do you have? And what is the reccomended voltage for it? Some RAM needs 2+ volts but the MOBO might only supply about 1.8. If this is the case bump up the RAM voltage in the BIOS.

Ok,

So I changed the RAM Yesterday, I used some Kingston Hyper X DDR2 6400 INSTEAD of the the OCZ Platinum.

Therefore i have changed the voltages to back to "AUTO" and the P5b Deluxe now boots ... and accepts the ram and i can begin to load xp (as was happening before).

but again im having the same problem... BSoD as soon as it finishes loading the initial sequence of XP where it usually asks for 3rd party raid driver etc.. "HIT F2 for a 3rd party RAID driver" blah blah blah!

Yes its always at the same bit, And after well over 50 tries, using 2/3 different versions of XP.

Yes it happens with Windows 98 too (as i tried installing this too)

There is one CD drive connected thru IDE, the HDDs are connected via SATA ports.

Again i must repeat... the HDDs are picked up in BIOS one as MAXTOR the other SEAGATE ....

Do the HDDs NEED to be SATA II ? And why if so..

Temps are running cool, no overclocking going on here just want the standard system up n running.

P5B Deluxe Mobo,
E6850 CPU 3GHZ
2GB (2 x 1GB Sticks) OCZ Platinum DDR2 800Mhz Ram
2 HDD 's SATA one is MAXTOR 120GB the other SEAGATE 160GB

as far as i can say, there maybe somehting wrong with your hdd. as after loading your hdd is used, and as it starts in your case, BSOD occurs. try to use another hdd.use one for starters and then the other. like this u will know which one is the culprit if any. hope i helped.

Bad hard drives can cause many blue screens. what type of blue screen is it posting? Try to write the numbers down as it posts and the error message.

If you have any spare drives try to use them. Make sure your drives if they are SATA are hooked up to the main SATA controller if you have two.

Maxtor drives are crummy..I've had a few in the past that have caused LOTS of problems. All my maxtor drives have died on me within 2 years...Half my WD drives have died and none of my seagate drives have died. Always try to pick out a quality hard drive. If your maxtor drives are old then it might be the source of the problem. Even if they are new you might have a crummy drive. Try a replacement drive if the methods I posted above don't work.

Hard drives can cause LOTS of problems...Even if they are storage drives and not OS intended they can cause your pc to blue screen repeatedly if they are busted.

I doubt your drives are the problem. Test them with the appropriate CD bootable programs from the respective manufacturers. I heard some problems with asus, but I can't remember what exactly. I'll do a quick look to see if I can come up with something.

I think it's your Jmicron controller. This isn't your problem but it is indicative of the problem. It's all over Google. I would suggest spending $30-$40 on a SATA DVD-RW to see if that clears the trouble.

Please help me, Asus P5B jmicron drivers, dvd burning issue - Tech Support Guy Forums

Good ol jmicron...I suffered from the same problems as you are...Its been awhile since I solved it...I do know that I gave up and let the ODD show up as a scsi device...This whole problem stems from the fact that the jmicron controller controls the ide drives on these boards...My problem was solved when jmicron came out with a beta driver for the controller driver 1.17.04.00...The part I can't remember is if I installed my original driver from a floppy on the windows installation..(I think I did to get it to work properly)Get over the scsi issue I know it kinda sucks but learn to live with it...PS I have a p5b-vm and I think the best solution would be to get a sata ODD and just use the intel sata connections.

Out of curiosity have a read here http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/511530-jmb363-driver-intel-965-chipset.html
