I hope somebody here can help me.

Yesterday, after realizing that OCZ Rev.2 DDR2-800 memory price went down at my local shop, I went to get 2GB of it to bring my system to 4GB total memory. I told the employee there that I wanted this to bring my system to 4GB total RAM and be done with that for the rest of my system life. He then told me that only P5B-E board could use the whole 4GB and that even under Vista 64-bit (that I'm using right now with WXP on dual-boot) I would see only 3.1GB of it... that the BIOS would keep the other part of it for itself. :? :? :? :? :?: :?: 8O 8O

This guy just cast some doubt in my mind, so I step back and told him to forget about it and left.

I know that I have to enable memory remapping in the BIOS to see the whole 4GB of memory, but will I really see only 3.1GB or was this employee out of his mind when he told me that?

I went on Asus forum for P5B Deluxe board and never is it mentionned that thing would happen. I'm only wondering if it's another case of Asus closing treads on there forum that make them look bad or if everything is really OK with that.

Thanks. I'll get back after work to check your answers.

Well, I guess I'll just go get my other 2GB of memory somewhere elses.

Anyway, I'll take some time to think about it. I might as well wait one more year to go from 2 to 4 GB. I won't miss it this much this year and price will be even lower next year. I might even get 4GB more for the same price.

I.... have.... to ... resist... the urge... to... get more.... RAM.

Thanks, for your info.

P.S.: Do you personally have 4GB on your system apt403?

Nope, I spent most of my build budget on the gfx card. :) Then sold the gfx card. Now I need a new gfx card... I think I'll get another 1950xt, but this time the Sapphire version, along with an HR-03.

😀

I think I'll put my money aside for either R600 or G80 refrash this coming summer to replace my X1950Pro myself.

Thanks anyway for clearing my doubt. I'll keep that in mind for next year.

4GB of ram does weird things to some systems. I believe there is a problem addressing all 4GB of ram for Windows. Seem to remember reading about that in lots and lots of places. I know you want it al, but it will take some homework to get it...
