Hi all,

My newly built machine seems to be running hot, at least my mobo does. pc probe II shows the MB temp at 52C. Almost crapped my pants the first time the probe's alarm went off. This is basically when my machine is running at idle. Are there any BIOS settings that i need to set first? Or do i need to remove those northbridge/southbridge caps? is 52C really that bad, if not at what temp should i really be worried? if it helps my cpu temp rarely goes above 32C, usually at 30C. this is using probe II, not Core Temp.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks

cpu: 6800 core 2 duo (2.93 ghz)
mobo: asus p5w dh deluxe
ram: ocz ti pc2 8000
graphics card: ati x1900 with accelero HF

50 degrees celcius is a tad bit high (no need to worry though). How is your cooling in your case? You have enough fans etc?

Mine idles at +- 40c and creeps up to about 50c after gaming for about 2hrs straight.

Also, whats your room temperature?

To sarafan and mpilchfamily, the motherboard sensor is actually located near the south bridge. Removing the cap from both will help as well as replacing the thermal paste that ASUS used with some AS5. I removed the caps as well as the thermal paste and after two weeks, my motherboard idle temperature dropped from 41C to 31C. Also, if your motherboard temp sensors record anything like mine, if your CPU is at 31C, I guarantee it's really idling around 48C (ASUS Probe in general seems to be off by 15-20C, since it gets it's reading from the same place as the BIOS.

What case are you using?

And from other posts I've read, they said the mobo can handle up to 100C, but I'd rather not push it that high.

Oh wait, after I updated the BIOS to 1506, my temps dropped. Maybe they did fix the temp probe with the BIOS update. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Sorry for the long post.

Sarafan, what kind of case are you using?

I just saw that you also have an Accelero X2 on your ATI card, this will raise the temp in your case. I suggest you by a PCI slot blower or modify the cooling of your case. ATI cards are known for their high heat output. I know when I put the Accelero X2 on my card, my motherboard temp went up about 5C! And when gaming, it hit 55C! But that's all fixed now 😀

Hey Eurasianman, which "caps" were u talking about? Is it on the board?
Sorry, im a noob guy and my moto is: If you dont know, ask...

Cheers 😀

Hey guys,

First, thanks a lot for your help

AKJ and Eurasianman, the case i'm using is the Thermaltake Armor with the 25cm side door fan (full tower). I got it mainly because i read on the forums that it usually keeps things really cool inside, being as large as it is. Right now i'm not so sure about that though :) This case has i believe 5 fans in total, 3 that pump out(1 up top, 2 in the back) and two that pump air in(side fan and 1 in front of the hard drives). Also, i have 2 westerdn digital 320 gb hard drives, i use a 9500 zalman fan and my PSU is an OCZ 700 watt.

I didn't consider the Accelero having that much of an effect either! Then again it does make sense.. i was just too worried that my x1900xt would make too much damn noise otherwise. I'll look for those PCI slot blowers on newegg tonight.

Eurasianman, thank you for telling me about the BIOS.. i will flash mine tonight. I think i am using the 1305 now, hopefully the upgrade will help some. Also.. if i am to remove those North and South bridge caps, will i need to remove my mobo, or is it possible to pop them off while it's inside the case? Stupid question probably, but I just got all my wires tied off and it'd be a pain to remove it now heh.

Lastly, my room temp isn't exactly cool. I have a space heater that keeps things rather warm, definitely over 75 F, but probably not far over 80F.

Thanks again everyone

Wouldnt the humidity level also play a role in your current temperatures? I think you have more than sufficient cooling hey.

I dont think that upgrading the BIOS would result in more accurate temperature readings though.

The bottom line is that your temps arent dangerous, but they are a little bit higher than one would expect.

BTW, does the AI booster application and Asus pc probe 2 both give you the same reading for the system (MoBo) temp?

I was holding off on installing the AI booster application as i intended on using the wusy guide for OCing, but i didn't know it also shows the mobo temp. i'll take your advice and install it tonight, hopefully it'll match up to the probe II reading like mpilchfamily mentioned. Maybe after the BIOS update it'll read differently.

Speaking of the BIOS, unfortunately that will need to wait until i buy a USB thumbdrive tonight. i thought it would be an executable like my dell laptop, hah. Oh well, latest BIOS looks to be 1602, a few steps over my current 1300's. if the temp reading drops i'll be sure to let you know, thanks again

OK.. the Asus BIOS files have a ".ROM" extension. You need to use the Asus Update software, which can be found on the drivers and utilities CD that came with your MoBo.

Remember that if you changed any BIOS settings from the defaults, once you flash your BIOS, you'll have to setup those items again.

Goodluck

Well, I was thinking there were multiple temp sensors on the motherboard and that the BIOS was programmed to only read certain temp sensors and report them back to the user. However, if there is software that can read the temp of the CPU diode, why can't they create a BIOS that reads from the same place?!

Other than that, I didn't do anything different and the BIOS reports a 6C-10C drop on the motherboard. The room temp is still the same and the fans and everything are still the same.

I hope my board isn't going bad

Ok, the updated BIOS helped. I updated to 1602 a few hours ago, and the temperature reading has dropped from 52C-54C to around 46C-48C. I'm pretty happy with it now, thanks again for the advice!

Hey guys, sorry to attempt to hijack this post.
I have posted this already, but i didnt get any replies since monday...

Heres the question: Has anyone got the DH Remote to work with media player 11 and winamp??

Again, i apologise for this, but i cant get mine to work correctly with those applications

i have media player 11 installed, so i'll try and install the remote software tonight and will let you know AKJ.

.. as a side note, i tried running PCMark05 last night and it stops prematurely and says something about a "suite" or something. google showed that media player 11 might be the culprit. because of this i'll be rolling back to media player 10, at which point i'll see if the remote works as well.

anyone else have this problem with PCMark05 and media player 11?

Temperature drop noted when using BIOS release 1602.. Temperature now show as 33-42 degrees when idle and when on full load respectively..

The latest DH remote software is still in beta, and the little footnote states that they've fixed an iTunes matter, but nothing about media player and winamp.
