the P5B is newer, but in it's case newer is not always better. The 975 chipest seems to overclock better, tho both boards have the same options, testing has shown that you can do more with the p5w dh. the p5b only supports one IDE channel because the ICH8R southbridge has totally elimnated IDE support. The P5W DH with the ICH7R supports 2 IDE channels.

A lot of people have been reporting higher core 2 duo temperatures with the P5B vs. the P5W DH. Despite the 965 chipset being newer, the 975X still remains Intel's flagship chipset. Oh and the DH is also crossfire ready. One of the last Intel chipset motherboards that will be i'd imagine 😉.

Internally the P5W DH has one more PCIe x1 slot than the P5B. Externally they are identical as far as ports, the difference being the DH comes with a little remote control gizmo that's kinda neat, esp if you computer is somewhat out of reach, as you can turn it off and on via remote.

Basically the biggest advantage of the P5W DH are the additional IDE channel, and the 975x's better overclocking and ease of use. The 965 also has some heat issues with C2D (at least a lot of reports from posters here on TH). However the P5W DH itself runs a little hot, so investing in a $6.99 chipset cooler would be a good thing.

As for upgradability, i'd say they are dead equal. the 975X being intel's flagship, they are going to keep it in the loop. There's talk that the 975X will support quad-core kentsfield chips (just rumors). i don't know if the same can be said for the 965.

I'd give a slight advantage to the P5W DH Deluxe over the P5B / P5B Deluxe. And i chose the P5W DH Deluxe for my C2D build. I would just recommend if you get the DH, but that cheap chipset cooler 😉.

the extra ide is not atapi (cd/dvd) compatible... 🙁 i think its off the jmicron controller.... but for HDD's its good...also there is a hardware raid option for 1 or 0....the remote is almost useless(can not control the system volume....only the app....uses shortkey's...not multimedia key's...only works when you launch the app with it....).....to my laptop it goes.....its now for DVD's/pvr watching....

I wish to comment on the board....but my cpu is not in yet.....the wifi should be nice for some....i just stole the antenna and put in on my router(so i can move it around)....and use the router antenna on the computer.......

actually if you know what you are doing you can get the remote to do just about anything, scroll the mouse, up down arrows, ENTER, etc... etc..

and you're right, the secondary ide controler is HDD only, for IDE hard drives, which MOST OF US still use in conjunction with an ATAPI CD-ROM device... so it's nice to have that 2nd IDE controller, even if it's just for HDDs.

but will i be able to to connect lets say 2 hd's on one ide as primary (master, and slave) and use the second IDE to connect my optical drives as secondary(master, slave)? i have 2 IDE hd's, and a dvd drive, and a cd-rw drive, will i be able to use them as i am able to do so now?

thx

the primary IDE Channel on the P5W DH supports ATAPI CD-ROM devices (2) and HDDs. The Secondary only supports HDDs (2). So if you hook up your opticals to the primary, and HDDs to the secondary, you're fine. That's what i did.

thx for the info, much aprecieated, btw is the primary a black or the blue connection on the motherboard?or all is explained in the manual which comes with the motherboard? thx for the info once again....im still waiting for the motherboard to be available from newegg, so far no luck
