Question Pairing an RTX 3070 with a Ryzen 7 2700X @ 1080p/144fps?

Heyo guys. I know that the cards need to be actually released and independent reviews published, but if we assume that an RTX 3070 is only slightly more powerful than an RTX 2080Ti then a Ryzen 7 2700X should be formidable for the task at 1080p right? Even 4k60fps for that matter?

It should be better at 4k60fps, since that is more gpu bound than 1080p.

Also, yes.
The 2700X is a good cpu, but its a little behind for gaming, especially older, or less intensive titles that only use 1-3 cores.

At 4K I’d expect it to be good. At 1080p it was largely considered that a 2080Ti was overkill and even the best CPU’s often would be the limiting factor and not the gpu. I’d definitely wait for the reviews and to see what information comes about the 3060.

Thanks guys. I'm a little confused what you mean when you say 'cpu is the limiting factor at 1080p'? Does the CPU take on a heavier workload at 1080p vs 4k? Or do you mean simply that there's a point when the CPU can't push frames that the GPU would otherwise be capable of? I'm always capped at 140, for reference, I don't play unlimited at all.

I know that buying a "70" line from nvidia is a little overkill for 1080p, but the idea is to maintain maximum graphical settings at the highest possible framerate going forward hopefully skipping one or even multiple new generations without significant performance loss, while also not breaking the bank with an 80, titan etc.

At lower resolutions such as 1080p the gpu can generate more FPS however it can only go up to the number of frames the cpu can deliver. Therefor it’s more likely the limiting factor for FPS will be the cpu before the gpu. At higher resolutions there is more load on the gpu decreasing its maximum possible FPS and it being the limiting factor before the cpu.

The 3080 appears to be a very nice gpu, reviews will tell the tale. But it should be quite capable for the next several years.

But, AMD has yet to respond and Nvidia will then release variants of the 3000 series.

It’s going to be a great year for gpu’s. Patience is what I’d suggest.

But at 1080p with a 3080 and2700x, at least from the paper launch, appears to be overkill.

What motherboard do you have? A cpu upgrade at some point would bring more performance at 1080p.

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX AM4.

My target is anything between 60-144fps @ maximum settings. Right now the 2700x paired with a 1070(no ti, got it around launch and it still kicks ass) achieves that on a mix of high and medium in the most intensive games, with the CPU hovering around 8-20% usage and the GPU consistently 99%.

I know that there's a significant gap in performance from 1070 to 3070, but is it enough to necessitate an upgrade? Surely the 2700x should be able to hit my target framerates with a 3070? Or will it really max out and begin to bottleneck trying to hit 100+fps?

i have a ryzen 2700x and a 3070, in 1080p im getting over 100 fps in most games at ultra details setting, although i play at 1440p, if you enable dsr at 1.78 in your nvidia control panel, it will allow you to set your games at 1440p even on a 1080p monitor, i find it runs better at 1440p, i hit 150 fps at 1440p on doom eternal, i hope this helps!
