Does anyone know if you can alter the Panning on FS2004 with the Sidewinder
Forcefeedback 2 joystick. I have used the Change Assignment Instructions
that worked ok with FS 2000?

Don't know about you lot but I really prefer the progressive movement. After
all in real life you don't jerk your head from one direction to another you
do so gradually.

I didnt get any replies to this post so does that mean that

a) you cant have a progresive pan or
b) you can but no one likes it?

Are you asking here in reference to the "indexed hat button panning"
in 2D cockpit mode? In V virtual cockpit mode, of course, the
panning is "smooth". I'm not sure if the 2D cockpit view panning
behavior can be changed. However, read on...

When trying to re-create a 3D experience in a 2D environment (a single
monitor in front of our face, with no "real" peripheral vision, for
instance), compromises must be made, and we'll never really be able
to reach a certain point of "total realism".

In "real life", we are in fact able to drastically switch views from
one extreme to another almost instantly, but all that is in between
will simply be a blur at best. In this sense, the indexed panning
mode of the 2D cockpit view might even be more "realistic" (in a very
limited way) than the rather slow rate of "smooth panning" that is
default in the VC view. This rate of smooth VC panning can be
adjusted to be faster, but even so, to try and find a truly
"realistic" setting beyond moving one's head/eyes relatively slowly,
even this adjustment can only go so far towards emulating "reality".
If you do want to at least speed up the smooth panning in the VC, you
can go into your "FS9.CFG" file and adjust this parameter:

[CONTROLS]
....
PAN_RATE=

The default pan rate there, if I'm remembering correctly, is "400",
and this is indeed "unnaturally" slow compared to what's possible for
a human head and eyes (though we can also move our heads/eyes that
slowly, we probably wouldn't, as a rule, in a situation like flying).

Stuart mentioned "TrackIR", and though I've never tried it, there
seems to be divided opinion over its ultimate desirability, though it
is a very interesting concept.

Melissa has covered the panning issue from the realism standpoint very well.
I would only add to this that I also don't find the panning speed realistic.
Increasing the speed doesn't do it for me either. The most realistic eye
movement unfortunately is almost instantaneous.
If you have the capability, (an unused 4 way hat switch for example) on a
joystick, you can assign this switch to the "look" assignments for 90
degrees both sides and 45 degrees forward on both sides. This won't replace
the panning of your regular hat switch on the stick, but rather will add 4
instant snap views for you to use if and when you want to use them.
I have one of the 4 way hats on my CH throttle assigned this way, and I find
myself using it constantly, especially in the pattern.
