Paperclip test - without paperclip?

Hi guys,

Quick question, does anyone know if its possible to test a PSU without using a paperclip? (would a length of copper wire work instead)

I only ask as I live very far from a shop, and kinda want to test it tonight if I can.

Yeah you can use copper wire for it, the idea it's to simply complete the circuit between the black and green pin connectors that give the "go ahead" signal to the PSU.

Yes they should work...

well don't that just test the psu turns on?? it don't show you its putting out the correct power to the leads for your board or devices

One can also use it to isolate noises like coil whining or to see if the PSU fan is properly working, but yes, it is a simple test, one from which you can start your diagnose procedure.

Thanks for that, sorry for sounding like a dumb-ass now, but do I need to set the multimeter to anything to do it, or will any setting complete the circuit? First time trying it now. Thanks a lot man.
