partition revovery on windows 10

I have an older HP media center m7360n. Not sure what I did, but one of my hard drives seems to have lost its two partitions. I am 100% sure that the disk did not get formatted accidently. I tried using a free partition recovery program, and although the instructions were so convoluted I wanted to go no farther, the program did show that the data is still there (somewhere, anyway). It even showed the old volume names. I tried putting the drive on another computer

Can anyone recommend a better free partition recovery program or a good method of recovering my data? I REALLY need the data.

You might want to take a look at https://www.lifewire.com/free-data-recovery-software-tools-2622893 for a listing of various freely-available "data recovery" programs which the author indicates was recently updated.

Understand it's a crapshoot at best; sometimes you're lucky, othertimes not. If you "REALLY need the data" (as you state), then you can consider a commercial data-recovery service. Very expensive as you can imagine.
