Partition SSD for new OS

Hello! I am about to change motherboards and cpus from AMD to Intel. I have Windows 7 installed, and I'd like to create a new partition to install a fresh copy of Windows 8.1. Should I create the partition before doing the swap and booting from the 8.1 disk? Will I be able to select that partition once the install begins? Or does it not work this way?

You will be able to create the partitions during the Windows 8.1 installation process.
