Partitioning hard drive

If i split my hard-drive into two partitions, Save my pictures to the partition without the operating system on it. I should be able to reformat and re install the partition with the operating system on it while my pictures are saved on the separate partition?

yes, that's one of the use of multiple partitions.

Thank you, i though it would work ok. I just wanted some confirmation. Would you recommend and certain programs to help do this a little safer then what windows 7 has built in?
