I have recently put an old C2Q 6600 CPU back in use with a new mobo for the purposes of getting a friend into PC gaming on the cheap. However I hit one snag, the dreaded BSOD. Unfortunately I don't have the specific crash codes, and I haven't been able to force one in a while, but I was able to consistently do it with P95. IIRC, the codes were something about memory issues, but I don't have any specifics.
So naturally I pulled out my Memtest x86+ disk, but it completed three times without error, which left me baffled. After switching hard drives and falling back to Win 7 rather than 10, I no longer get the blue screen, but I still fail P95 blend test within seconds. All of the other tests run fine for at least half an hour (still in the process of testing), and is able to complete 10 runs of Intel burn test without hitch, all the while remaining under 70 degrees Celsius.
I've never encountered such an issue, but I've had more experience with the Core i series than the Core 2s, so should I just finagle with RAM timings, or is there some BIOS setting I might be missing? I've tested with multiple sticks of ram in single and dual channel configs, so I can't imagine it's a RAM issue at this point. At this point I'd just be happy knowing if it's the CPU, mobo, RAM, or whatever else, so that I can replace it and get it on to my friend.
TL;DR: System runs fine mostly, passes all benchmarks but P95 blend test, which fails with a rounding error, and runs fine with windows built in diagnostics tools and with memtest.
