passive search checks

I've never seen an explicit statement of the difference between a
Passive and Active search, so I'll just ask. All I've seen is that when
you are Active Search mode, or have Keen Sense, you can "apply your full
Search bonus to the check." But what is the case otherwise? If you are
in Passive mode, do you just add half your Search, or something like
that? Is this the only difference, or is an Active Search done more per
round than a Passive one? Etc.

Thanks.

Active Searches are rolled more often, I forget the exact details.
Also, Active Searches have a range of 10 ft versus 5 ft for Passive
Search (NWN manual p82). Elves (and other creatures with the Keen
Senses feat) are considered always to be in Active Search mode. I have
probably forgotten some other details, but those are the basics.
