Passivly cooling 1.1Ghz T'bird?

Could I passivly cool a 1.1Ghz Athlon T'Bird? Can anyone recommend a good heatsink for this ad tell me how I would install it. If I had 1 120mm Fan running at low speed would this be enough airflow in my case?

I don't think it's "possible" to cool T-bird passively
You might need a HUGE heatink i guess..if u really want to do so

Oh ok then, cheers guys. I want to make an always on web server, but the problem is I want to make it very very cheap. It also has to be very very quiet, because i dont want it bothering me when I sleep.

Well, if it is socket 462, it should fit. Zalman has some "flower type" of heat sink. Maybe you should check their web site.

I cant even passively cool a p3 750Mhz, which only emits a small 19 watts of heat (Im guessing your Tbird is at around 50 watts), so that would be extremely hard unless you were to severely undervolt and underclock.

I love to recommend the xp-m chips, so here I go again.
At a mere 45 watts, they are the coolest hot chip around. If you have some bucks, a passive water system will be fine otherwise a good hs with a slow fan will be very low noise.

I used to have one of those... hell, i STILL have for my dad's PC.... a Thunderbird-C 1.1Ghz (1.130Ghz to be exact, 8,5x133Mhz), but I had Thunderbird-B 1.1Ghz (11x100Mhz)before I exchanged it.

In both of them I use a Thermaltake Volcano 2. Nowadays it's a pathetic cooler, but at the time it is pretty good.

This is just to break the ice that Tbirds are HOT but NOT ludicrously hot (unless it's the 1400Mhz one, that one burns)

I dunno about passive cooling, I wouldn't be safe just by adding a Heatsink, they still do a lot of heat.

Why don't you consider a HSF+Fan that is a more silent nature (low-rpm Fan)?
Heck I have a ThermalTake SilentBoost on my XP2800+ and I can barely hear it.

No, but you can passively cool a Tualatin Celeron. You could get an XP Mobile CPU and underclock it, then passively cool it.

Here's what I did with my Athlon 1.1 ghz (badass piece of computer hardware if you ask me)

I put the biggest heatsink I had laying around the house on it, along with a 60mm-80mm duct adapter thingy on it, teamed up with a quiet 80mm fan that could still push quite a bit of air. My temps never break 45c, and it's amazing how quiet the thing is

If you're really set on passive cooling on this setup and you haven't already done something else, passively cool a Duron. It would be much cooler and probably not perform at too much of a loss to your current 1.1 'Bird. Check out the new article on anandtech re: CPU temps.

DISCLAIMER: Intel fanboys, read the whole article before you come out thinking that the 2500+ Barton is the hottest chip ever.
