Password Protect

I am running XP Home and have three computers on the home network. I have
folders and drives setup for sharing so all the computers in My Network
Places see them and can assess them.

I want one computer not to be able to assess these shared driver or folders.
How do I do that? I thought password protecting it like you do in Windows 98
but I can't seem to be able to find anyplace in XP to do such.

Does anyone know how and if possible for me to prevent one computer from not
assessing what I have shared?

Hi,

Only on a domain can you specify which machines/users can access a shared
folder. WinXP Home cannot join a domain or be managed by one. WinXP's folder
sharing does not support passwording.

OK, thanks for the reply and I do appreciate that.

You are saying then, that XP's folder sharing could be password supported if
using Windows XP Professional? I know someone in a small business that would
like to do this and he has XP Pro on all his machines. If so, do you have a
link to somewhere with some info on how to setup domains?

Hi,

No, it's not available in Pro either. You need Pro to join a domain where
access is managed by a set of permissions, not passwords.

Ed,

Try this:

1) Right click on the folder you want to be restricted;
2) Click on Properties item (this is the last item on the list);
3) You will see a tab for sharing
4) Under Network sharing and security you have the option of sharing this folder by using the password (ignore the first part where you are asked to drag the folder);

I think this is also available in Home edition of XP because my Windows 98Se can do this. I have networked my 5 PCs using various flaours of
Windows and they all work fine for me under a networked environment.

You don't need a domain stuff because it can be done in a P2P network as well.

Thanks but that must just be in 98 cause it isn't there in XP. I can share
there and either check to allow or not allow network users to change my
files. Nothing for passwords.

On my installation of Pro (which is NOT in a domain) I can go to the
Security tab of a file or folder and in the advanced settings I can deny a
particular user from the Workgroup access to that file or folder. is there
not a similar function in Home Edition (in Safe Mode perhaps?)

Thanks again. But, I can't find this Security tab you are speaking of. I
just decided to take the one computer out of the network and I don't have to
be concerned about now.

You must turn off "Simple File Sharing" for the Security tab to appear. In
Windows Explorer go to Tools-Folder Options-View and scroll right down to
the bottom.
