NT is designed to be "secure". The only supported procedures how to change
password is to know old one (for user) and run change password option from
ctrl-alt-del screen or (for administrator) to rewrite user password in user
manager admin tool. You need to be member of local administrator group to
change unknown password of local user and member of domain administrators
group with rights to change passwords to change unknown password of domain
user.

If you do not know password of at least one admin user, you need to do
following:
* most dangerous solution is to use NT setup repair option to replace sam
and security registry databases from older ERD. However, you can use this
only if you have such ERD, if you know admin password for time of ERD
creation and if you can use NT setup repair option on this machine. Even it
is dangerous, there are situations it is most simple and reliable solution.
* only supported solution is to rebuild machine - ie. backup machine using
tools outside NT OS (or use last regular backup if you have any), reformat
or other way delete previous installation and reinstall Os all users,
applications and restore data from backup.
* most used solution is to use any NT password hack or reset utility. You
can find bunch of them on web. There are free and commercial utilities, try
to search web for "Lost NT password". Commercial utilities are more
comfortable and they are covering more possible security configurations,
however they are expensive and still provided only "AS IS" - ie. use them on
your own risk. Free utilities are slightly more dangerous, but if you have
not any special security configuration on your machine and if you use
utility from "well known" source the danger of its use is very low.

I am using admin password reset utility from following source and I did not
experienced and even not heard about any problem with it.

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Simply make floppy according to instruction on this page, boot your machine
from it and reset/change password of build-in user Administrator. Reboot
machine, login as Administrator and exchange any other passwords you wish
using user manager. It is easy 5 minutes work.

Check out Linux sites. There are tools that you can download to crack any
password. You'll have to create an 'IX' boot disk the tool, then reboot and
follow the onscreen directions.

Note: the boot disk created is a 2mb floppy and cannot be read under any MS
os (unless you install the Unix driver).

Did you get an answer for this. I have a system for my
kids but have forgotten the admin password. I want to
change the password for one of my children until grades
pull up. Get any good advice?
