Question Pasting data into my second HDD makes it's active time 100% and write speeds tank

I recently swapped my laptop's hard disk for an SSD and replaced the laptop's optical drive with the old Hard drive. After moving it, whenever I try to write into my old HDD, Windows always pesters me for rights (the old drive still had windows on it) and copying or deleting from and writing to that drive quickly makes active time shoot up to 100%, even when the disk is idle and nothing is happening on the pc. I went ahead and formatted the drive, thinking it was a windows issue but no dice.
Any thoughts on what went wrong here?

I was so excited with this setup, and the few times that I could successfully copy stuff from the HDD to my SSD read times were really high (like 100MB/s). Unfortunately, pasting or deleting stuff makes the entire drive freeze.
Help would be appreciated! Thanks

Laptop: HP af006ax
Old HDD: HGST 500GB
New SSD: Crucial CX240
Windows 8.1
