Pattern Spider origins?

Hey all,

Does anybody have any idea where White Wolf got the idea of "pattern
spiders," the mechanical-seeming minor spirits of Stasis that show up in
Werewolf and Mage?

Was it a largely whole cloth thing, or is there a clear precedent in
literature?

I remember first seeing the Pattern Spiders mentioned in the original
Werewolf The Apocalypse 1st Ed. It seems they were a whole cloth thing, as
far as I can tell.
