I have already purchased the EVGA version of the 480 GTX and was forced to return it. I have used Nvida products since they were first introduced and could be considered a fan boy of Nvida as I look to them first before all others. I will also admit this card is the biggest disappointment I have had with any Nvida product, and it has forced me to really look into the ATI solutions.
Basically, it was unstable driving 2x1900x1200 LCD displays from one card as the heat sky rocketed, I spent 12 days updating drivers, looking for any way around this heat issue, the card would hit 92+c under load, with one display the card was fine, I manually set the fan speed to 100, let it auto control for days, and ran every test I could but I was still getting 4-5 crashes a day under what I consider very little load as my 8800 GTX has handled this same load for years, the speed was awesome, but the result of worrying about my desktop while I used it to drive 3D apps like Maya, and other game creation tools forced me to return it.
So what happened? I was using the Quadro 5800 "the $3,500 card" for a project for a year and never had these issues. Like most things these days I believe Nvida suffers from ego laden managers, share holder driven decision making, brain drain, and trying to create a customer level product that required more time and work before being released to the public. They first and foremost need to release solid products that keeps confidence in their brand, I think the burden of trying to make “professional” level products and consumer is too much for them, they need to combine the teams if they aren’t already, and remove the bullshit out of a system that is costing them customers like me.
This product is a lemon if you expect to drive two LCD displays with one card, it’s a step back not forward.
