Okay so we bought a fiber package into our home with a fiber-line going outside and into the house, pretty basic. We also got a modem/router in one from them too, and the fiber cable connected to that. And its a 500 mb/s line. First i asked my father to plug in the Ethernet cable and go to speedtest.net to checkout the speed, and i was amazed. It was going back and forth between 450-500 mb/s, Which is just freaking amazing, because you should consider the 10% traffic loss. Anyhow, after looking at that i went up to try it on my laptop, and what a suprise, it only shows 27 mb/s on speednet.net

I've tried both WIFI and Cable, but with no change. I even tried updating, perhaps that was the issue, nope. I've checked other forums and posts, nothing. I just dont understand. Is my network card maybe wrong? or perhaps its locked at 30? i dont know what the issue is.
I must add that i went downstairs and also checked WIFI on the 5G wifi we have up. We have 2 wifi names within the same box, he said one is 2,4G or something and the other being 5G. So i tested both. 2,4G gives me the same value as cable, Whereas 5G suprsingly gave me 120 mb/s one time and then it just dropped to 50 mb/s ish, and it just doesnt go up anymore. I seriously need some help here because i have no freaking idea why. My fathers laptop is able to pull 500 mb/s with cable and im only doing 27 mb/s with the same cable, and to add, our laptop's are fairly new.

As he always says when something is wrong, '' you have virus ''. Perhaps that's the issue ? I just dont know anymore, and i hope some of you might.

thanks.

EDIT: I went into Device manager and opened Networkcard then proceeded to update every single thing manually, and the only thing that actually did update was my Ethernet thing/name/whatever. I then went downstairs and thought why not test the cable again, and this time i got 100mb/s the first time and all the other times 70mb/s. So updating the driver sure was an improvment but i'm still missing 400mb/s? (350mb/s with traffic loss)
I asked my father do check wireless and he also got around 50 mb/s so wireless problems are from the IPS sides, not ours apperntly, and getting full 500 mb/s through wireless when the line is at 500 mb/s is too much to ask for, i know. But the problem is still here with Ethernet.

Looks like your laptop ethernet port is running 100 mbit only. Go in there and force it to run a 1 gbit see what happens. Am assuming your switch ports are all 1 gbit capable.

Ethernet is very simple. The old standard runs 10-100 mbit, the new standard runs 10-100-1000 mbits.

1st question. are you plugged into a switch via Ethernet? Second question, have you plugged directly into the modem and tested via Ethernet? The reason i ask these question is becuase ive had similar issues before and blamed it on my ISP when it was being caused by a switch i was using. I have Charter 100/mbps. I was connected to a Asus RT-N66U router which was connected to a unmanaged Asus 8 port switch. every so othen i would get knocked down to speeds of 2/mbps and couldnt figure out why. i started rebooting things one by one and behold the 8 port unmanaged switch was causing my issues. i tested this by powering off my modem, plugging my pc directly to the modem and then powering it back on. Got around 87mps. when i reconnected everything and powered back on i was back down to 2mbps. disconnected the switch and everything was fine. So you may want to try from the source first and see if the issue is still the same. Not sure if your modem is the same but if you connect directly to a modem you must do it in a powered off state so it can detect the new MAC address. Hope this helps.

I tried doing that but it just screws it up even more. I will have you know this though: My HDD is defect i believe, and it is how i got my laptop when i bought it. Long story short - I needed laptop for exams so i didnt deliver it in to the workshop, and now its acting up and being slow. Perhaps that is somewhat causing the issue ?

My switch ports are able to be 1gbit yes, i have that option in the device manager. But its on automatic at the moment, I tried putting it on 1gbit but the overall mb/s just slows even further down than 100mb/s of what i previously had.

1st and 2nd question: I am directly connected to the modem itself. The router/modem box they installed downstairs is what i am connected to. Ive tried both WIFI and Cable with so little difference. As i also stated, my father connected through the very same way as me, and hes doing 500-450 mb/s without any problems at all, it just jumps straight up to that number. And when i do it it takes 10 years to reach 100mb/s. Theres something really really wrong with my laptop and i know that.

If there was something wrong with the IPS or the modem/router my father would have gotten the same amount as me. And considering the reply i gave to "jsmithepa". when i bought this laptop, the HDD made noises. I contacted the buisness and they told me it is not normal, send it in for a check. I had exams, so that was a nono. Untill today ive been using it and its getting really slow, and im leaning towards either my HDD is screwing up, or its just full of virus.

What else could it really be, if not my laptop ? ive tried everything

So these past days i've been trying to download anti malware programs and other stuff to try and kill off every virus i have in my laptop (if i have any at all), and these are the results i got after a fresh restart of the laptop. This is with Ethernet directly through the modem box. Yes there is a good amount of mb/s im getting compared to what i used to get, but im still not understanding what the problem is. As you can see, on the left side is "download" and right "upload". While download is only at 173mb/s upload is 495mb/s. I still dont understand why download is not hitting 500mb/s like my fathers laptop. On his laptop it hit 500mb/s instantly on both download and upload. When i did this test on the image above, it took a while before it reached 173mb/s, and for upload it took even longer amount of time.
