PB Columbia GX USB Connections...

I want to connect the front USB ports on a GA-8SMIL Ver 1.0 board, but
there doesn't seem to be any info available as where each pin should go.

It's a 2x5 pin connection, the layout is like this;

0 0 0 0
0 0 0 0 0

This is slightly different to all of the connection diagrams available
on the various 8SMIL boards referenced on the Giga-Byte site. Packard
Bell's "support" doesn't include any pin diagrams for the F_USB. I'm
assuming PB have made it that way just for the hell of it

Anyone got any idea as to how to connect it properly ?

The layout is as follows
one end is +5volts and one end is always ground

if you have five pins two ends are ground

pin1 pin2 pin3 pin4 pin5
+5v data - data+ gnd gnd with over
current
shieldi

Actually only the 1st 4 pins are needed
A voltmeter sould tell you where


This is a standard pin out a MB does not matter

Same for 2nd row

If you have a cable to conncet to header
you can test the pins
Hard to blow out a usb port

But the connections are supposed to be non-standard, hence the post.

It's a standard header type slot, but the pin layout is not as per
normal (from what I'm led to believe from what little info is available
on the Packard Bell forums).

Maybe, but - after trying standard connections (before your post) - my
digital camera is not responding to USB anymore

I do not have access to that unit

You are trying to connect exactly what from where
to where etc

Let me just say PB or its manufavturers
probably did not create USB

USB is a standard
It must have V+ Gr and data = and -
and sometimes a shieled ground

The pinouts on a MB can vary due the the traces
and the designer
But its final terminatiom must still have the components
above
That is a fact of USB
All USB
Now the speeds and versions do vary
That has nothing to due with the first listed components

I'm trying to connect the two front USB ports of a case to a PB
motherboard which I've purchased. The connections from the case are
clearly marked with which is which (+5V, -, +, Ground).

The connections on the board USB header are as stated;

1 2 3 4
- - - -
0 0 0 0
0 0 0 0 0

I've tried connection across the top row, from left to right with +5V to
ground in both directions. Same for the bottom row (ignoring the last
one which should be the over-current pin).

It's a giga-byte board, a special edition of the GA-8SMIL called
Columbia, which is not listed on the Giga-Byte site. The pin layout of
the USB header on this particular board (as diagramed above) is
different to all other GA-8SMIL versions that are listed by Giga-Byte
(so I can't use the information in the other 8SMIL manuals).

This board appears to only exist for PB (it has a customer logo embedded
in the BIOS), the only information that is available on this board on-
line is on the PB website (and the NEC site for obvious reasons).

I understand that, I'm not a clueless newbie I have no doubt the
connections are all there, it's just the layout that appears to be non-
standard. This post below from the PB website refers to the Columbia II
board;

There are a few other people with the same problem as well...

I could go the obvious route, and plug in a PCI card or get an internal
3.5" hub, but I wanted to get the two inbuilt case connections working
if possible.

Just a quick note, given up on it. I'm assuming PB deliberately don't
want people to home service their machines in this instance, as any info
on it is completely abscent from their "jumpers and connections" page on
this board (and that's the only available resource on it).

I've picked a different board up to replace it, USB header worked first
time using standard connections.
