Question PC auto rebooting (no pattern)

Hello everyone,

For a long time that my pc has reboots (no Blue screens, no info, no nothing) and I can’t pinpoint the source of the problem.

This reboots dont have a pattern. They can happen midle of the boot (after post and before windows loads), they can happen in standby (after windows has everything loaded), and they can happen under load (like with games). But the majority of the reboots does happen under load with games. And under Bios I never experienced a reboot.

Too make things even harder to pinpoint and diagnose reboots tend to happen between 1 to 3 days and then he goes stable up to 3 to 4 months (very very weird) most of the time. The shortest period of stability I had was close to 15 days

At same time since this problem started to happen, I saw a degradation in disk performance (4 x HDD).

One more thing that may be worth mentioning, is when I shutdown the computer there is a small clicking sound that comes from the Motherboard engaging the contacts of the power. So when the computer reboots the same clicking sound happens.

The reset button however doesn’t have the clicking sound.

Tests I have already done Recently.

Memtest86 (passed)

OCCT Personal, all stability tests, including the Power tests (no reboots under any test).

Tried running without XMP (crashes still happen)

I don’t do overclocks (so there is nothing to restore to defaults)

The 4 HDD, there is not stability test for this, but they don’t have errors and they pass on speed test with flying colors.

Tried running the pc without any connector (HDD & Power lights, power and reset connector, etc) and the reboot remains

On the hardware part.

- Power Supply was replaced, Reboot remained (The fan of the old one was giving his last legs so bought a new one)

- Motherboard replaced, Reboot remained after a 3 months period of stability (I was truly confident that the problem was coming from the MB Disk controller so bought a used one)

- already remounted the pc a few times looking for things that could be causing short circuit and force a reboot. Didn’t find anything. The only thing worth mentioning, is that one of the place holders behind the motherboard is not fully centered for the screw, that off center is minimal and still inside the MB protection, so I left it there for extra support.

Wall socket, already tried a different one (same result), but that same socket is on same wall just other edge of the wall, so dunno if inside the wall is using the same power cord.

But then again the previous pc (before this one) didn’t had problems on the same wall socket (But time affects all things beeing a living beeing or not 😛 )

So the question is, how do I get to a conclusion? How do I pinpoint the problem?

Getting another CPU and GPU to test, is out of the question, because that would require someone dispensing one for at least 3 Months. A Professional shop, for at least 3 Months, at best it would just gather dust there, as i’m not seeing a professional working on it for 3 months, plus that would mean not having a pc for at least 3 months.

Any suggestions / ideas would be appreciated.

What is your pc build, parts? Try disabling automatic restart so then you may get an error message or bsod with some kind of indicator. Even if it just turns a color it gives you some evidence to work with.

the auto reboot option is already disabled (usually its one of the 1st things to be disabled after a reeinstall)

Now for the pc specs:
CPU: Intel i5-6600
Memory: 4x 4GB - Crucial Technology (DDR4-2400)
Motherboard: Old - MSI Z170A Gaming M3
New - MSI Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon
Graphics: Nvidia 960 Armor (4 GB)
Disk: 3 x Western Digital (1 GB)
1 x Seagate (1GB)
Power Supply: Old: 600 W
New: 700 W

Both Disk and Power supply model, i would need to dismount them to find out, but honestly is it really important?

Meanwhile i forgot to mention, pc has no Temperature problems, so shutdowns dont come from that.
CPU and graphics are under 75c in max load
