Hello all,

Complete newbie to the world of PC building here. Previously had a macbook pro using Logic Pro which was running smoothly until the motherboard unfortunately died on me. I was quoted £700+ for repair/replacement therefore couldn't justify the cost. I am selling the macbook for parts in order to start my own PC build. I will mainly be using the computer for music production (I haven't decided which DAW I will be using - possibly Cubase or Ableton) and otherwise fairly light usage. Having done a bit of research I am finding it difficult to decide which parts are most suitable for my needs and within my budget (~£600 - can be more if absolultely necessary).

So far I have a 27" monitor, studio monitors, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface, Samsung 840 pro 256GB SSD and have just ordered the Fractal Design Define R4 case online. Therefore I am still in need of many parts!

With regards to a processor it looks as though an intel i7 would be the best option for me and have found that the i7-6700k and i7-4790k are not too dissimilar in cost. I have seen the word "overclocking" bandied about a lot but don't fully understand what it is and if it matters to me.
Would like to have 16GB RAM but not sure whether it matters if it's 4x4GB or 2x8GB and which models are the best.

Therefore, I also need a Motherboard, a CPU Cooler, a HDD, a video card (?), a power supply, and an optical drive.

Sorry for the long post and I'd very much appreciate any advice and guidance!

Dan

Solution
CPU + MB - No need to overclock for your intended purposes. That is a fairly light load for an i7...
CPU COOLER - Not needed. The stock Intel cooler will be fine when not overclocking.
MEM - Dual memory controllers means matching pairs. 4x4 or 2x8 is still pairs (the first being two sets of pairs) and they will perform the same.
GPU - The onboard video will be perfectly fine. When / if you start gaming or doing something more demanding, the 450w PSU below will handle a med / large sized GPU with no issues.

Thank you for the information hombre, I really appreciate it!

Just wondering if anyone else would be able to add their tuppence and say whether this specific motherboard would be a good match or if there are any others that could fit the bill. Don't mind paying more for the motherboard if I would see a noticeable difference!

Having done a little more research it would seem that I could save money by getting an i5 processor instead and that an i7 is not essential for what I want - music production. Any advice?
